Just a little bit curious about this sensitive issue!

Edit (Should give my answer as well!):

Friends and family are welcome to watch dvd's in my home, but to be honest I am never lending my dvd's. Here are some reasons for this:

1. I hate empty space in my shelves
2. I need all my dvd's available for watching
3. When dvd's returned from smokers, I can smell it (and don't like it).
4. I'm not a free of charge alternative to local video/dvd rental stores.

I lend to my family but only a copy of the disc. I used to loan the originals but when they started getting lost and or scratched that had to end.

I'm fortunate that my friends (and there aren't many of them) are mature and reliable enough that I can lend them DVD's all the time, and I've never had one come back in an less than perfect condition. The only way i know they have been loaned out is that I do have them at home.

I will loan to my family and select friends on the strict understanding that if the disk goes missing or is damaged they will replace it. I was badly bitten with my CDs as I had several go missing or come back badly damaged that I stopped lending to all who asked. My family, unfortunately, I have not been able to stop but I do limit them in as much as they cannot have as many as they may want and cannot get others until they have returned the previously loaded lot. Also, I do not allow them to take newly acquired DVDs until I have watched them, or they are at least a month old (whichever comes first as I don't always watch what has just arrived due to the backlog, but in these cases they will have to return them if I want them ). I love the loaned facility on Profiler as it allows me to keep track of who has what, and how long they have had them!

I loan them to family and a select few individuals, basically, the ones I know will be handling them with care, and who will replace them should the unthinkable happen.

I never loan out special collectors items though (Planet of the Ape Head, Schindler's List in the plexiglass case, my Evil Dead Book of the Dead edition, etc.)

Same here, only my family and friends are the sort that understand that without being told, I'm glad to say.

I would not normally have to say so, but after being bitten once with the CDs I decided I HAD to spell it out so that everyone was clear as to the rules. any violation of said rules will revoke that privelege immediately, never to be re-instated.
I have no objections to taking movies to friends not on the borrowers list, on the strict understanding that we watch while I am there and under no circumstances be left behind.

absolutely no DVD is to leave the collection for any reason, I didn't buy the movie for someone else to watch when they want. when people start telling me which movies to buy so they can borrow I hit the brakes. If they want to see it that bad hit the rental places. Been burned one time too many, still haven't gotten around to replacing a couple nonreturned/damaged discs. I am very strict on this issue, took the wife a while to understand but she finally saw the light, she brought a movie to her sister to watch, and her sister was under the impression is was a gift and didn't have any intention at all of returning it. people make a lot more money than I do, if I can find a way to pick up some movies than certainly so can they.
sorry for the rambling, very touchy about this whole thing.

I gladly invite people to watch DVDs at my home or I bring some DVDs to a friends house to watch them there, but I don't lend ANY DVD. My DVDs stay with ME!

Some of you have some weird relatives and acquaintances.

I've never had any problem whatsoever to get my stuff back, unharmed and unspoiled.

Currently there are several tv seasons and several movies out there and I don't even need to write down who has it.

I do loan to family and friends. However, last year my parents went on holiday for three weeks and left my Dad's Army season 4 disc 1 spinning in the DVD player (no harm was done to it as far as I can tell). They have no idea how to use chapter search or any other functions on the player, so they usually just pause it at a spot when they go out, away, sleep. So discs can end up spinning in the player for days on end ( or weeks). They think the discs are indestructable!
