I hate to say it but it seems that DeepDiscount and it's partner company could be trouble.

I just saw this report on msn.com, and didn't want to believe it but it apparently is true.

Yeah, could be in trouble.

I find it funny that this is big news all over. It's just a book.

I'm actually proud to say I have not read a Harry Potter book, nor have I seen any of the films. I don't care about them.

And I even know how that last book ends.

With a.......

period.

Then you're missing some great fun, and a great set of characters.  I'd bet that there are as many adult fans of Harry Potter as there are kids, maybe more.

I also don't think Deepdiscount was trying to do anything sneaky.  Only those who pre-ordered the book were shipped to, and since they don't charge shipping unless you want it right now, and since books are generally shipped fourth class, I think they were just trying to ship them to arrive on the big day.  I have not yet received my copy but I was notified by e-mail that it had been shipped on Tuesday, and the estimated arrival date was not until the end of next week.

My daughter's copy shipped Tuesday from deepdiscount too. I agree with John... I am sure they were just trying to get it to people on release day. I just hope this don't hurt Deepdiscount's prices or change their stance on shipping early enough for you to possibly get releases on release day.

Yeah, I'm also pretty sure it wasn't intentional, just a business trying to keep customers happy.

Amazon, where I ordered our copy, is playing it pretty close to the vest but they're still playing the hype game. I've gotten an email a week since first of the month stating that I'll receive it release day, that I saved a little (and I mean little) money on a the price, and today's, that the shipment is being prepared. Funny, my other pre-orders don't get this much attention.

I also hope DD's not in too much trouble. I've complained about them in the past but I was a d**k and I got over it.

I'm afraid I'll have to be the discording voice here.

I for one think the publisher is totally justified to sue them.  If Deep Discounts wants to sell online instead of having a physical store they have to accept the fact that they can't always make sure their customers get the new releases on date.

People who buy online must also accept the risk of not having their things on release date.  If they absolutely want to have it on july 21 then they should go wait outisde a book store to buy a copy as soon as it opens........hoping that they'll get one because they won't be alone there.

Wether it was intentional or not and no matter how good their intentions were, they happy funtimeed up.  They entered a legal agreement with the publisher and they broke it.

FWIW I agree; bricks-and-mortar bookshops are having a hard enough time of it as it is and taking away one of their very few advantages for the highest profile book of... well, just about ever, specifically after entering into a very well publicised legal agreement, is unfair practice and foolish in the extreme.
They must have known, geven how often they send out tihngs early and lots of people gloat about receiving said item in advance of launch (be it DVd, book or whatever), that they should have erred on the side of caution in this case rather than treating it as a normal case of "well if it arrives early I'm sure nobody will mind".

That said, I also hope that it doean't do tham any permanent damage as I don't think driving them out of busininess will do anyone any good... certainly not me and a lot of users here!

I would give my kids a talkin' to if I heard them say that.

I love watching a good movie when I can, but I end every day with a book.  Greatest invention ever, imo.

And I agree with Rifter, HP is a really good read.  I've enjoyed every one of them.

Oh NOES!  Someone might read a piece of fiction two days before someone else wants them to read it!  The world as we know it has ended.

Funny, I ordered my copy from Amazon and this morning my wife went "why didn't you order from DeepDiscount?" - she didn't know they'd started doing books - we order dvd's all them time from them.

My pre-orders usually arrive one day before release date, but that's mainly due to me being only about 3 hours from their warehouse in Chicago.

That they have a distribution agreement and violated it could be trouble for them - if any publisher/book were going to be a sticky point - this is the one.

You don't see game makers upset and they ship early all the time. Deepdiscounts.com is the best retailer out there for DVD's they should just go back to selling DVD's.

No idea why every online store wants to be an Amazon clone.

However, that's not the point... they signed a legal agreement saying they wouldn't do something then went ahead and did it. They had the option of not signing and not selling the book and they didn't take that option.
