I ordered the X-Files suitcase edition online and received it yesterday. Only one of the ten discs I've tried so far is even recognized by a DVD player, so I'm obviously going to ask for my money back. However, I'd like to know how to be fairly sure they're pirated rather than just defective. Is there any way to know for sure?

Thanks,
Jade

If one disc didn't work, I would say that it sounds like a bad batch, but 1 out of 10. I would definately return it and ask for my money back. If you can wait a few months you can get the X-Files: Ultimate Edition.

Did you try playing the discs in more than one DVD player? I had "disc not recognized - disc dirty" problems with some Universal DVD-18 discs played in an older DVD player of mine a few years back, but they worked fine in two newer DVD players.

Where did you buy it from?

I tried it in two regular DVD players and two DVD-ROM drives.

There is a lot on that site that are not in the genuine R1 packaging, or multi-season packages that are not on the main R1 sites - Amazon, DVDEmpire, etc. It looks very questionable.

The X-Files set looks like it was photographed on a bed... I can't see the official distributer doing that!

I think it is a pirate set... sorry.

Yeah, there's something about that site that gets my Spidey senses tingling.
None of the security logos actually link to the security sites, which is odd. And he seems to be selling sets that are packaged in a way never seen on any other online store.

If the underside of the discs is a pinky/purply colour then they're copies for sure (although I have seen some lovely Chinese pirates who actually pressed their copies!)

Looks rather shady. The prices are to low and I didn't recognze a single release from any mayor online-seller.

You should try to get your money back.

If you think it might be, but can't quite pin it down, go to the video rental store and see if they have any of those discs for rent.  Most of the X-Files stuff has been issued as single units or at least single seasons.  Those would be legit, and yours should look the same or very close, and should have the same content.  Some of the bootleggers are very good, but you can still tell 98% of the time when comparing it to a known good copy.

Yeah, I think you have a bootleg... I'm also afraid you'll have trouble getting your money back (though I hope I'm wrong).

Definetely a bootleg site (even if they promise otherwise on their "About" page).
For example:
They offer Complete Simpsons set including Seasons 1-17. In the product description it even says, that only the first nine seasons have been released on DVD so far.
Another telling sign on this set is the following sentence:
"Supplies may be limited as this set is selling fast...You will ONLY find this title on our Site!"

Thanks to all, and no worries about getting the money back. It's on a credit card, so I can decline the charge and give the reason. They won't give me a hassle about that.

All my best,
Jade

I just got a note back from them saying they are international release DVDs and that's clearly stated on the their web site. It is stated, but I'm not sure what it means. I checked that they were region 1 before I ordered them. Are they trying to say they aren't pirated?
