I've always been facinated with the Star Trek series but have never watched anything in sequence except for some episodes on TV.

I'm planning to start renting DVDs and watching the whole series. I know there are series like Enterprise, TNG, DS9 etc. So in which order should I watch them (If someone can please post a list of the series names and the number of seasons in each).

Also, I was planning to watch Battlestar Galactica. Am I right in assuming that currently there is Seasons 1, 2 and 2.5?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers.

I think since many of the episodes involve time-travel, you should probably watch them in order of broadcast to get an understanding how the series evolved as a whole. It might be cool to watch Enterprise before the original series and the original crew movies before The Next Generation series.

There are 6 ST series and with the exception of the last one, every series plays after or while the previous one

in order of production

TOS = The Original Series (with Kirk)
TAS = The Animated Series
TNG = The Next Generation (with Picard)
DS9 = Deep Space Nine
VOY = Voyager
ENT = Enterprise

in order of timeline

ENT
TOS
TAS
TNG
DS9
VOY

ENT plays 2151-2155
TOS and TAS play around 2265-2270
TNG from 2364-2370
DS9 from 2369-2375
VOY from 2371-2377

The movies 1-6 play after TAS and before TNG (mid-2270s to 2293)
Movie 7 (Generations) plays shortly after TNG (2371)
Movie 8 (First Contact) plays 2373
Movie 9 (Insurrection) plays 2375, after the ending of DS9
Movie 10 (Nemesis) plays 2379

I'd suggest in order of broadcasting, but you have to keep in mind that TOS is over 40 years old and TNG also had this year its 20th anniversary.

Regarding BSG there is the mini series (=the pilot) and 3 seasons. In some countries the second season was split into a 2.0 and a 2.5 package.

Well, there are 5 series total.

The Original Series (TOS) is the one from the 60's, which ran for 3 seasons.
Then in the 90's there was The Next Generation (TNG), Deep Space Nine (DS9) and Voyager (VOY), which ran for seven season each. In 2001 came Enterpirse for four seasons.

Also notes that some of the series overlaps - DS9 season 1 aired together with TNG season 6 (and yes, there are some references to each other) and of course DS9 S2 aired at the same time as TNG S7. After TNG, VOY took right over, so the first five seasons of VOY ran side by side with the last five of DS9.

Enterprise (I have only seen an episode or two of it) is set a few hundred years before TNG, sometime between TOS and TNG, I believe...

There is also an Animated Series from the early seventies, but it only ran for some 20 episodes or so over two seasons...

I watched (and purchased) my Star Trek DVD's in this order:

1. Star Trek TOS (3 Seasons)
2. Star Trek TNG (7 Seasons)
3. Star Trek DS9 (7 Seasons)
4. Star Trek VOY (7 Seasons)
5. Star Trek ENT (4 Seasons)
6. The movies in-between.

After the initial watching of all Star Trek episodes you are free to change the order...

Actually, I never got around to buying ENT... Is it any good, compared to TNG and VOY?

btw: to give you a ballpark figure:

TOS: 79 episodes á 50 minutes
TAS: 20 episodes á 25 minutes
TNG: 176 episodes á 43 minutes
DS9: 173 episodes á 43 minutes
VOY: 168 episodes á 42 minutes
ENT: 97 episodes á 42 mintes

= 713 episodes; 30587 minutes = 509h 47m

I watched half a season and then got bored and didn't switch in again.

Well, to be honest I like VOY and TNG more. IMHO ENT is something in between. But when TNG, DS9 or VOY was released, I had the same feelings. I had to watch the series several times to get familar with it

PS: My favourites are DS9 and then TNG.

I never really liked VOY that much. That's mainly because the authors couldn't decide whether or not the prime directive (PD) is worth a damn or not. This week in Janeway's eyes the PD is like the sacred scrolls and next week it is "more a guideline than an actual rule". One got the feeling this woman has neverending PMS.

You will be very busy for the next few months.  There are almost 200 disc for the entire Star Trek TV shows.  and 10 movies.  Have fun and keep us informed as to how you like it.  I personally have seen them all and liked TOS and VOY.  DS9 was too much into religion.

DS9 was just Babylon 5 with the serial numbers filed off...and then set in the Star Trek universe.

OR you could say B5 was DS9 set to it's own universe since DS9 actually started before B5 did

(big fan of both of them BTW  )

Well, ENT started real slow. But Season 3 and especially 4 are simply awesome. Some of the best Trek in there!

I rather enjoyed watching ENT and was rather upset when they decided to end it early.  Now we'll have to wait 20 years before the next ST series comes out.
