Hi,

I wonder whether I am imagining, but I am quite sure that certain people have removed their flag. I don't want to name names because I am sure they did it for a reason but I can't imagine why.

Well, maybe they are afraid of being a victim of preconception due to their nationality, or maybe they have  been already offended.... I do not know exactly, but it could be an explanation..

Since the flag appears based on the location in your profile, maybe they moved and changed the location, inadvertently deleting the link to flag.  But probably not.  You could be right, kahless, about people not wanting to be stereotyped.  It's sad, because I think it's useful to know where someone is comng from.

I find it especially troubling when someone asks for assistance -- and includes something like "Please excuse my bad English" but who doesn't say what his/her native language is.  There are enough users who are fluent in many languages who could help these people better -- and in their own language -- but it's tough if there's no clue where the people are from or what language(s) they understand.  Someone's username is often not helpful, either, because any Star Trek/Klingon fan would recognize a name like kahless  and without the flag no one would have a clue that he's in/from Germany.

If I were fluent in a language other than English, I would be more than happy to help someone in that language if I knew he/she was also fluent in that.

I personally prefer these flags, since I know which language the poster/reader is used to... from my point of view, removing the flags increases misunderstanding and therefore offending...

I did notice the trend (if we can call it that) too. Then I considered removing mine as well (I am German, live in Taiwan collect mainly R1-USA DVDs...).

I also like the flag and agree that they occasionally help to realize that someone is not a native English speaker. I hope those having removed theirs didn't feel like doing so due to having been offended...

I could quote many examples where having a flag increased offending (for instance people speaking of me as "french friend" in a negative way instead using my name... though the fact to be french had nothing to do with the nature of the discussion...

and I also read on this forum things like that :

"You being from France I realize that anarchy is in your blood ..."

So I understand people who remove their flag...

That has NOTHING to do with your flag, Yves. The locality France is part of the Contribution. I wish you would put as much energy into working your database as you did compalining. It is a mess and very skeletal, data is incomplete, inaccurate and just generally a mess, there is much to be done to clean it up and make it useable.

Here is one example for you, Yves.

Does anybody see any problems in the following image?

EVERY title in the set is like that and the actual profiles are worse yet.

comes from you.

The fact you hate french people annoyed me only until I understood you were not a gentleman. But I can understand people who remove their flag if they do not want to see such writings concerning their country.

I don't hate French people that is your interpretaion, sir and a grossly inaccuarte one at that. But more to the point, to deny that statement on your part would be to deny the History of France.

French Friend(s) have been used in this forum. As the limited way of textual expression, not seeing the body language of the user. It would be hard to determin if this is used in a negative or possitive way. You put far to much weight on whats going on in these forum. Enjoy the forum and have fun doing profiles. Should i take your remark as negative? or do you have problems with me using Dutch in this forum?:

I just think we should use english on english forums, dutch on dutch forums and french on french forums. I doubt many people here understand easily your language, and as for me I try to use english here though I know mine is far from perfect..

While i understand the sentiment, Yves, I don't want to discourage a user who is not versed in English from posting, no matter the language. Usually I will leave such posts to others who are fluent, but i can manage in several languages, even though it's rusty as all get outs.  <shrugs>

In case of Giga Wizard, he is fluent in english, so I think there is no reason for him to write here  in dutch.
