| Posted: | | | | I'm in the process of rearranging my collection. I like to group them into genres. I do this so my friends can find what they want to watch, some just like comedies, others have to have a sifi film, and still others have kids, so i want to group what they can watch together and to keep the kids away from adult type movies.
here are several examples of what seem to me to be arbitrary and asinine genre labels:
The Addams Family: Comedy, Horror Addams Family Values: Adventure, Comedy, Family
Horror? To me horror movies are like Saw or The Mist or The Grudge or The Thing. This is something i can let the kids watch, comedy is a good place for them but I'm going to put them in my family section.
10,000BC: Action, Adventure
This may be an action/adventure film but it's clearly sifi or fantasy, I'm going to put it into my sifi section
Billy Elliot: Drama
Just drama? This is a prefect family film, a kid fighting for his dreams and destiny, if i put this movie into my drama group it would go right next to films like Blow, Blue Velvet, Boogie Nights, yeah, i want kids looking through these titles, NOT!
Spoiler on this next film:
Bridge to Terabithia: Adventure, Family, Fantasy
I did not read the book, so i did not know what was going to happen, a good thing I had watched it first before letting the kids have it, this is not something i want my kids to watch, no way is this a "Family" film, the little girl dies, i don't want little kids watching this! If anything this is a "Drama" and it is not going into my family section, I'll put it into my fantasy group.
Casanova: Drama, Comedy
Isn't this a Romance too? Isn't there a love story going on here? Chick-flick? Right?
The Cell: Science-Fiction, Suspense/Thriller
This seems more like a Horror, Drama more than those 2, though i agree with the genres it's listed with, i believe it's a Horror film first. This is just some of my frustration, not sure what to do about it, i have tried locking my own genre choice into my collection but when i refresh my profiles they return to these arbitrary genres. It's also a lot of work to go through my collection and change every other movie to a reasonable genre. |

| Posted: | | | | This is the reason I believe genres should be a local choice only. Now with 3.5 we will be able to have some local... but still have some in the online database as well (not to mention being able to make our own genres).
What I am in the middle of doing is just what you said... making my changes locally then doing something you don't seem to realize you can do... locking them so they don't get overwritten...
just Right click the padlock icon in the General info field... then go to lock... then Genre is about mid way through the list. | | | Pete |

| Posted: | | | | Pete is right and you said it very correctly madchef, when you said "to me", that represents your particular opinion which belongs locally. These are personal choices by and large. Notice what the rules say, "unless the existing Genre list is blatantly incorrect." "The Untouchables, for example is NOT a Comedy and if that were in the genre list that would be baltantly WRONG.

| Posted: | | | | I don't understand the purpose of this thread . Genres are completely subjective and a personal choice. If you believe a genre is blatantly wrong in the online database then submit a profile change. If you disagree with the genres in your local collection then change them to whatever you think they should be and lock them by right clicking on the title and choose Lock>Genres. | | | My WebGenDVD online Collection |

| Posted: | | | | Count me in with 8ball, Skip and Paul. Genres should be kept local IMO, and I never contribute any changes I make to them anymore, as people have their own interpretation as to what is what (and rightly so). Make your changes - lock them, and don't contribute... | | | Berak

| Posted: | | | | Here's why I agree with the others that genres should be kept locally ONLY: Your example: 10,000BC: Action, Adventure This may be an action/adventure film but it's clearly sifi or fantasy, I'm going to put it into my sifi section I TOTALLY disagree with you that this film is sci-fi or fantasy. TO ME fantasy has to involve magic/mythical place or creatures etc. And Sci-Fi needs to involve science of some description. (I'm generalising how I catergorize things obviously). Neither of these apply to 10,000 BC which is a historical film with creatures that actually existed. Anyway, it just goes to show that we all have DIFFERENT opinions on each genre. Please change genres to LOCAL ONLY, Ken. Thanks! |

| Posted: | | | | I have to disagree here, old friend.
The Rules are CLEAR and ken has handled it properly with the new Local Only fields. Some form of genre data is useful for the Online. Al Madchef, or any other user has to do is follow the rules.
Genre Genres are often a matter of personal interpretation, which can differ among users. If your personal preference for Genre differs from the main database, you can store the information you prefer in your local database and lock the Genre field from further updates. Do not make contributions that only change or re-order Genres, unless the existing Genre list is blatantly incorrect. | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! CBE, MBE, MoA and proud of it. Outta here

| Posted: | | | | Quoting pauls42: Quote: just change them to what you want (I do) and then lock them.. Another one for this... I used to just go with the online genres but recently have been doing a lot of 'change locally and lock' because I got very annoyed with different seasons of the same TV series having different genres (or if they are the same then done in a different order); guess I'm just a bit anal about having them match but I doubt I'm alone in this! I have no idea why you lock them and they change back; they certainly shouldn't so I think yoiu may be doing something wrong there! FWIW on your comments: Adams Family... agree sort of it's not Horror but then again I've had big discussions on this before. Traditional horror like Chris Lee Dracula films ae so different from movies like Saw they don't really belong in the same genre to me. Also (and this is a bone of contention!) many users automatically use Horror for anything containing vampires or zombies... to me they have to be intending to 'horrify' and I calss things like Buffy or Blood Ties as 'Fantasy' because the creature are fantastical and there's a 'magic' element. Still, Adams Family I would call a Comedy Horror, so not a prmary genre but certainly has Horror elements... it's just Comedy Horror is very different from straight Horror and there's no easy way to show this apart from adding both in. 10,000BC - not SF or Fantasy to me; I'm with Pantheon in that it has no mythicall creatures, hi-tech or magic Billy Elliot - I would never class a film as Family if the rating (in the UK where I am) is 15 (strong language) and I'm sure many (though not all of course) parents would agree... and BTW in the US the theatrical version was rated R so definitley not Family fare! Bridge to Terabithia - it's a PG, Family seems reasonable to me. Not all kids family have to be 'happy happy', it sepends how the sad elements are handled. I personally haven't seen it but I would say if this isn't Family then neither is Bambi! Casanova - Depends on the version! I would say the David Tennant TV version definitely had Romantic elements and yes, I would add it in... other versions are about a man obsessed with sex, not necessarily love. Any no, IMO, the version I've seen is NOT a chick-flick! The Cell - Yep, I would class this as Horror and the BBFC agrees (Rated 18 for Sci-Fi horror and Violence) | | | It is dangerous to be right in matters where established men are wrong | | | Last edited: by Voltaire53 |

| Posted: | | | | Please don't make Genres local only. Sure, there are disagreements, but genres are rarely at issue in contributions (certainly not to the level of years ago before we could vote on contributions). There's no need to throw all of them out of the main db simply because they don't meet our individual needs. I'd rather change some of them in my local to my preferences than to have to enter them all locally. It's much less work to change a few than it is to enter them all. | | | ...James

| Posted: | | | | WOW!
Now this is fun, everyone with their on opinion, interpreting my original post differently, i love it!
Point 1:
Personal preference on genres should be kept locally, agree, to many different opinions not too.
Point 2:
Part of my frustration is that, it's a lot of work to go through my collection and change every other movie to a genre of my choice (over 900 titles) but i think I'm going to do it anyway.
Point 3:
Your right, i must be doing something wrong with the locking of my genre choices, but I'm going to figure it out!
Point 4:
"I don't understand the purpose of this thread." WHO CARES? I've seen some really stupid posts in these forums, but you don't see me critisizing their right to post whatever they want too! | | | Last edited: by THEMADCHEF |
