Try the following:
Open Notepad.exe and type
Bush hid the facts
Save the document close Notepad and reopen the document.

The original text has disappeared and you'd see either chinese symbols or placeholders.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Funny.

I tried it with Cheney but it didn't work.  Guess he didn't hide the facts.

Doesn't seem to work on my (Vista) system.  Any explanation for the odd behaviour when it does do it?

DJ Doena provided a link to the explanation above. Vista has extra smarts and keeps track of the encoding, even for a notepad file.

You can force the error by overriding it. First create the file as usual. Save it. The default encoding is ANSI. When you load it, the text will be normal. You can also "save as" with the Unicode encoding option. When you load it, it will look normal.

However, if you "save as" in ANSI encoding, then subsequently, File/Open the same file and override the encoding to Unicode, the text will magically switch to chinese characters. This will only happen for the types of text sequences discussed in the explanation.
Thanks for your support.

On my XP box, I just saw blank spaces on re-opening.  Probably because I don't have other language packs loaded.

Funny.

Didn't work for me either, on Version 6.0 of Notepad, Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 installed.

This is almost as good as typing "I'd like to see Bill Gates dead" and then run it through the thesaurus in word (v 2000 and older i recall)

It didn't work for me at first. Then I typed in "bush" with a lower case "b" and left off the period at the end.

It works only if you don't capitalize Bush and leave off the sentence's period.

Also supposedly it isn't just the phrase "bush hid the facts" but a sequence of characters that is similar.

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070208125206AAemSrb I tried switching the sentence to the nerd phrase and it didn't work, I changed it back to the bush thing and that didn't work, so apparently it does it the first time the sequence is typed in, but after you change it you get normal saving function.
