Knowing the member base around here, I'm surprised this wasn't posted earlier.

Warner Bros is launching an on-demand service which will eventually give you the ability to custom order a DVD from their entire 6800 film catalog!  Read the article here.  I think this is a great idea, at a good price.  Hopefully this will encourage more studios to follow suit.

The interesting part will be how to profile these discs!    Obviously, there won't be a UPC code, so I'm thinking by Disc ID.  But, will the Disc ID be the same for two people who order the same film or will each order generate a new ID#?  Only time will tell.

Release dates might also be tricky as I'm not sure if Warner is going to bother to track when a particular disc became available.  I was in the Warner chat last night on HTF and it certainly sounds like they have great plans.  At 20 bucks a disc though, I'll probably be treating these like Criterions.  In that I mean not a lot of impulse buying.

Yeah, me too. I just looked over the list and while there's several that I'm glad to see available, I'll have to put some consideration into which to buy and how often.

It certainly is a clunky site too. Lots of weird heavy graphic stuff. Regardless, I'm glad to see this ability has come about for old Warner stuff.

My hope is that the price drops down eventually to around $15, or at least offer a buy 4, get the 5th free deal.  I know there are coupons available, but I would like to see a regular discount on the discs.

This was actually asked on the Home Theater Forum chat with WB last night. Of course WB just cave a generic answer:

The service has just launched officially today...to astonishing sales....and the issue
of pricing as a concern has not been discussed.

The whole chat can be read here.

I read that as well.  Of course there will be a huge surge in sales when you quickly dump 150 classic titles into the marketplace at once.  We'll see what happens as the months go on.  They say they will release around 20 titles a month, plus the advantage of this program is that nothing should go out of print, since they are publishing them on demand and they own the full rights to the films.  I just wish the price point was a little lower, since these titles are bare bones (and would likely be available for around $12-$15 on-line if they were a regular release with a SRP of $19.97).  It will be nice, however, to find some of those obscure musicals, gangster films and film noir that would never see the light of day if this process wasn't available.

Thanks Mike..,,  I can almost guarantee these titles would be not much better than what you'd find playing in its 'uncut' version on TCM. and its like.,, ., Widescreen versions would not be anamorphic, and stereo or mono audio would not be, or may not be  processed digitally but would be analog.
I'm sure the library at Warners and others studios would have ( just as Radio rock stations are today)  keep all it's  'library'  on TeraByte Hardrives and thus can be brought up at a moments notice to be shipped via fibre to Corresponding Televsion networks.., and in this case.,- The movie can be brought up and burnt to a DVD-R., silkscreened, dropped into a hand made case.,

( just as others are today doing using Vuse and other software burning sites..) ....

If you read the description of each DVD, there is an "available date" (3/22/09 for all these), and a statement declaring that "This motion picture is in its original theatrical aspect ratio." On the DVD full description page it refers to 16x9 full frame. Video clips are provided to show the quality of the video: The DI is shown in 4x3, Doc Savage in widescreen.
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

I think this is a great idea!  Now, if the price comes down a little!  $19.95 + S/H is bit much for movie only dvds...

What about the fact that since they're burned, not pressed, so will be DVD-Rs they are likely to corrupt and stop working over time... sometimes in my experience, a very short time!

From the Warners chat:

"...2). The discs are of the highest quality. They are manufactured via propriatary MOD
process which is very different from home-used DVDRs on one's computer....we guarantee the quality
of these discs and will stand by them."
