From thedigitalbits.com

Here's some news we think is pretty exciting: We've confirmed with our sources that Paramount is - at long last - finally preparing The African Queen: Centennial Collection with a tentative street date of 10/13 (date subject to change).

Yaaaaaayyy, applause

[Editor's Note: We had direct confirmation on the record from the studio earlier this year that they were working on the transfer, but this is the first word we've had of the final release.] We believe this is currently a DVD only release, but a Blu-ray could still be planned for later in the year or next year.

Really.... no blu-ray planned?!?  I've waited this long I guess I'll have to wait a bit longer.

You guys in R1 land did not have a release of this yet? No need to wait if you can play PAL R2 discs, we've had The African Queen since 2001. Take a look here.

More about the upcoming US release here.

And this gives the impression it will be a completely new restoration, so hopefully they'll release it on Blu-Ray as well!

Hal:

Before you go making that wish, let's see how good or bad the transfer is. The last time I saw The Queen the print was in horrible condition. I know the restoration has taken many years. <fingers crossed>

I have an R2 version but I can't wait for the restored version in R1...either DVD or Blu will suit me just fine!

Great news! I have a Region 4 PAL release. The transfer is awful.

I am hoping for a restored version.

OK, so now that we're about to have The African Queen, and we already have the original King Kong, is there going to be any generally agreed-upon Most Anticipated R1 DVD? Or does this pretty much finish off the list of the superclassics?

Guess it depends on your perspective, but I'm still shooting for "The Magnificent Ambersons".
