I just heard from a friend of mine that this version is one of the worst BD releases ever. I have not yet seen a review, nor seen it for myself. From what I am told they did a cleanup via computer and the computer removed effects, lol, I am also informed that there are no current pans to correct this. Buy at your own risk.

Users at Blu-ray.com gave it a 4.4 out of 5.  At less that $18, if I buy it with Braveheart, I will give it a shot.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

There is no assurance that Gary picked up on this or that he received a retail version< I don't know yet, myself. I am only reporting what I have been told, he also told me that Paramount executives were screened a pristine copy that was different from the one that was actually released. When I have a chance to investigate this myself, I will report my findings, for the moment I have to say my warning stands.

Well if any one could f up a back catalogue title in HD it would be Paramount. Any one familiar with there catalogue on Blu-ray will know they have a history of DNR.

I had high hopes the sapphire series was a sign they wanted to mend there ways and offer good quality back catalogue HD films.

Let's hope so.

They messed up the Gladiator Blu-Ray. Of course it is sharp and has a much better picture than the DVD, BUT they used an autocleanup tool, which removed spears, arrows, fireballs, there are many comparisons online by now, you can see that the Blu-ray misses alot of those stuff.

Braveheart is perfect tho.

cheers

Looks like im sticking with my region 2 extended edition which im sure has the original version on it as i was not impressed with the extended cut

Glad to here Braveheart is looking good though. The only thing there that needs a good clean up is the incredible historical inaccuracy.

None the less it was passionately correct and being Scottish i might if i feel like be forking out the 20 quid for it and should have little to worry about.

What im realy worried about is them screwing up Chinatown

What's worse is apparently there is a new true high-def transfer they did a couple years back (before HD DVD went under) and that one was not used except for the extended scenes which apparently do look perfect...

Well I have already lodged a beef with Paramount on this issue. We've gotten Studios to make corrections many timesover the years, so speak up, gang, loudly. Remember Warner's original Willy Wonka release!!!!!!! Family friendly Full Screen indeed.

Hmm... I'll wait to hear more about this one before getting it. I picked up the Gladiator Extended Edition DVD set for just $8 brand new long ago, which is plenty nice enough for now.

I picked up both Braveheart and Gladiator Sapphire Series despite the so-called edge enhancement and DNR simply because BestBuy was selling them @$17.99 each if you purchased both together!!!  Hopefully Paramount will issue a replacement disc in the future since this Sapphire Series is going to be their best foot forward!!!

Thanks for the link! From the screenshots it looks like it has lost some of the details in the picture. But its still a upgrade from the DVD.

The deal to buy Gladiator and Braveheart together, is that online only or in-store as well?

Both. I purchased mine in store and once both had been scanned into the register, the price dropped from 22.99 each to 17.99 each.

DigitalBits review

from some of the screenshots it appears they have removed parts of arrows with their stupid DNR (which shouldn't be applied to blu ray films). Unfortunately the idiots who do this work have got used to used DNr when creating DVDs and haven't got out of the habit.

Who the f works on these titles for them Mr Magoo. How the hell can someone not notice missing spears and other various elements of the films.

Any wonder Coppola never trusted Paramount to remaster the godfather films.
