I don't look forward to doing a clean install.
My original XP disc is so old, it doesn't even have Xp Sp1 on it. And, it was an update, not a full version, of the OS.

I could be wrong but he probably does have at least SP1 installed on the computer. He just says that the XP CD is the original release not one of the re-releases with SP1, SP2, etc... built in to the installation. __ When I switched from XP to the beta of 7 in Jan I wasn't particularly looking forward to a clean install either. However it does give people the opportunity to remove all the stuff that they never use but don't uninstall "Just in case". I personally wouldn't switch back to XP now. |

In the past, I always had to buy my OS's double: once in English, once in Japanese and use multiboot.
Now, with W7 Ultimate, you can set per user which language you wish to use among 35 available. I've been doing the same with MS Office 2007 and it works like a charm: just buy the software once and then set language per user account.
That's a big step forward for international families like us. So I'm going to buy w7 Ultimate soon ... | | | Blu-ray collection

| | Posted: | | | | Just be sure and run the Windows 7 Upgrade advisor prior to starting the installation. As you have noted since your going from XP to Windows 7 you will have to do a clean install. However, clean installs sometimes work out for the best.
Currently I haven't upgraded any of my systems from XP to Win 7 but, I have done two Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium which were in place upgrades. And I'm getting ready to upgrade our Media Center which is running Vista Ulitimate to Windows 7 Home Premium which means that system will have to be an clean install. So I'm backing up the hard drive first.
After this system I have two other Media Center PCs in different rooms still running XP Media Center so I'll be upgrading them as well as time allows. | | | Are you local?

It will also take time for software developers to get a hang of it to.
By that time the price should be more reasonable price. Just upgrade to XP service pack 2 for the time being. |

| | Posted: | | | | A guy at work upgraded from XP to Vista, and then to Windows 7. But it messed things up so badly he wiped the machine and did a clean install of Windows 7. You can use the Windows Easy Transfer program to copy your settings and files to an external disk first. You can then wipe the machine and install Windows 7 and import your settings back. I would make sure you back up all your data as well. |

I'm currently using Windows 7 Compatibility Center to check my hardware/software. Waxlion: I've investigated this option. It seems the best so far. Any ideas on cheap/good back-up software? Well, the Ultimate version is more expensive of course than the home version, but if like us you like to have your OS in multiple languages, it's the best option because: 1) 1 ultimate is still cheaper than 2 home editions in different languages 2) you don't have the hassle of multiboot and having to configure everything (network settings, printer, etc) twice.
