Houston residents busted for bootlegging "2012" DVDs. Would you believe "Paranormal Activity"? Okay, how about DVDs of the "Get Smart" TV series?

Three Houston residents were arrested Friday and charged with making $3 million on bootleg DVDs of the Get Smart television series and some Disney and Universal movies.

Article here.
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

I just verified it at the Houston Chronicle. I wouldn't want to be them. From the article they were indicted in Tucson, AZ, 3 men ages 29-58 have been arrested and a 31 year old female will be allowed to surrender to authorities. They have been charged with mail fraud and Copyright violation. The copyright violations carry a maximum of  5 years and/or $250,000 per count. The mail fraud carries a max 20 years and $250,000 per charge.

Then they will have to face civil side of the case when the Studios sue for damages..

They had been selling on EBay from time to time and engaged in this activity from 2005-2009.

If they charges hold water they are in BIG, BIG trouble. The three million they pocketed will be small change  when this thing wraps up. The people who purchased from them are also vulnerable, if they can be traced, some of them may have helped to save their own hides.

And some here want to poo-poo Copyright violations....not this little black duck.

Some people have the mentality that piracy is somehow justified as all this content is owned by major corporations.

What they don't understand is writers and such make a living out of DVD, Blu-ray sales and there the ones who suffer most.

I have seen pirated movies and really they suck compared to the ACTUAL dvd. Usually if it is a movie i  really want  to see i wont watch a pirated copy. such as the Wolverine movie. a guy at my work had a copy BEFORE it came out in theatres. i refused to watch it because i wanted to see the movie opening day. i have since purchased it on blu-ray.
also the website ioffer.com i think sells alot of bootlegs too!

Why didn't you simply click on my link in the first post?

Some of us can (at times) be more informed than you, obviously.

Or did you need to verify that I had not set up a fake Chronicle website to deceive you?

Sheesh...

This is the main reason why I don't buy movies on Ebay anymore.  I used to sell my old DVDs on Ebay but, who can compete with the bootlegs.  Ebay has an alert feature to report bootlegs but, they never really do anything.  May shut down the one auction that is reported but, leave the other bootleg auctions the seller is conducting.  The only time I've seen where Ebay does something is if the seller takes the PayPal money and runs then PayPal has to refund the buyers back.  Just goes to show you Ebay cares more about their commission and listing fees then they do about really protecting the buyers.

If they studios really want to stop this go after Ebay for ignoring the illegal merchandise being sold!

Vibro I think you Skip was checking because you said you stole the headline from fark, not because he doesn't trust you.  When you added the sorry about that chief I thought it may have been a gag as well.

I used to buy on Ebay all the time and they used to have great prices.  I once bought a ten dollar movie for ninety-nine cents and then two bucks shipping.  These day are over though.  The last three films I bought on Ebay, years ago now, were bootlegs.  I had one seller tell me that is just the way it was.  He did refund me though so I cannot complain too much.  But now I will not do it.  For those of you who do, here is a rule to remember, if it sounds to good to be true it is.  I can see finding the real deal for  five bucks less than the brick and mortar, but when someone offers a brand new film that is 24.00 in the brick and mortar for 5.00 it is a crock.  Also if someone offers Disney movies online they are VERY likely to be bootlegs, especially if from Asia.
