Movies of the '80s Marathon
Time for a little Blast from the Past. This thread will be for my reviews of movies made in the '80s.  No matter the Genre, no matter if it was theatrically released or a TV Movie. Just as long as the movie was made in the '80s

When doing these Marathons I like to add a cartoon from the same decade between the movies. Unfortunately in this case I have a load of movies from the '80s... but only a few sets of cartoons from the '80s! So I am hoping to fix that problem within my next few DVD orders. IF YOU HAVE A FAVORITE CARTOON FROM THE '80S I AM TAKING RECOMMENDATIONS! But as I said... I do have a few sets here (or coming soon) that I will be able to use...

But as I said... I do have a few...

In My Collection Now:
Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show: The Complete Series (16 Episodes)

Regions 1, 2, 3, 4

Released: 8/7/2007

Full Frame 1.33

The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians (8 Episodes)

Regions 1, 2, 3, 4

Released: 10/23/2007

Full Frame 1.33

Dungeons and Dragons: The Animated Series (27 Episodes)

All Regions

Released: 8/25/2009

Full Frame 1.33

On Pre-Order:
Saturday Morning Cartoons: 1980s (11 Episodes)

All Regions

Released: 5/4/2010

Full Frame 1.33

13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo: The Complete Series (13 Episodes)

All Regions

Released: 6/29/2010

Full Frame 1.33

So even when I get both my pre-orders I will only have 75 cartoon episodes for this marathon. And the '80s is one of my biggest (if not biggest) decades for movies I have in my collection. I won't add the list of movies here this time as it is just too long... but I can tell you I have 206 movies from the '80s in my collection! So I am running a bit low on cartoon episodes to go along with it!

And when the Man of Steel becomes his own worst enemy after Kryptonite exposure, Reeve pulls off both roles with dazzling skill. Relive Superman III in all it's heart, heroism and high-flying humor.

My Thoughts:
Since I recently watched Superman II... I thought I would start this marathon out with Superman III. I know a lot of people that don't like this movie what with the way they went with comedy for the movie. But I must say... I kind of enjoyed that for a change. Don't get me wrong... I enjoyed the first two more... but I thought it made for a nice change. And I like Richard Pryor... so that helped me too. And I don't think I would want to see another comedic look at Superman. I also enjoyed Anette O'Toole as Lana Lang in this movie. She of course went on to play Martha Kent in the TV Series Smallville. I also thought the whole Superman vs. Clark Kent fight was cool.

Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show is an American  animated television series about a team of superheroes  which ran from 1984 to 1985 on ABC. It was produced by Hanna-Barbera and is based on the Justice League and associated comic book characters published by DC Comics.

The Bride of Darkseid (Part 1)
Season 1 - Episode 1
Firestorm makes his debut as a superhero and is invited to join the Super Friends. Darkseid pursues Wonder Woman to be his and is able to capture her when Firestorm accidentally shuts off the Hall of Justice's force field.

My Thoughts:
This was one of my favorite shows when I was young... all the variations of the Super Friends... but this one in particular as I always liked the character of Firestorm. And I still do... even though I am not quite sure why... because they really did make him too powerful. It was like he was the answer to most any problem they had. But even with that... he was always a favorite character of mine. And this pilot episode introduces him showing us what he can do (go through solid objects... change molecular structure of inanimate objects) and how he got his powers. All these years later I still enjoy this show a lot. The pilot is a 2 part episode... so I need to watch me another '80s movie soon so I can get to part 2!

My Thoughts:
This is a movie I haven't seen in years. So many years in fact that I couldn't remember too much about it at all. I do however remember seeing this movie as a teenager. I was lucky that my mother was cool enough that she didn't worry much about what I was watching. If I came home with a bag full of movies from the video rentals... she would ask me what I got. And if I said some horror... she would say "Yuck... you are on your own with those... get me any Karate or War movies?" The movie is much shorter then I was expecting it to be... running at only an hour and 16 minutes. It has some decent killings in this one... and there is a nice amount of T&A for your viewing pleasure. Along with the names mentioned above there is a brief early appearance by Brinke Stevens. Over all I would say it is a good horror movie. I did enjoy it... I guess I would say it is good for what it is... as long as you don't go into it expecting a masterpiece I think you should enjoy it.  But it could have been better. Maybe flesh out the story some more. Possibly give the movie a little more length. But of course at the same time that could possibly make the movie worse as well.

Season 1 - Episode 2
With her free will removed, Wonder Woman leads the Super Friends into a trap after they arrive at Darkseid's palace to save her.

My Thoughts:
This, of course, finishes off the pilot's storyline. I enjoyed this second part just as much as I did the first.

Title: A Nightmare on Elm Street
Year: 1984
Director: Wes Craven
Rating: R
Length: 92 Min.
Video: Anamorphic Widescreen 1.85:1
Audio: English: Dolby Digital: 5.1, English: Dolby Digital: Mono, Commentary: Dolby Digital: 2-Channel Stereo
Subtitles: English

Stars:
John Saxon
Ronee Blakley
Heather Langenkamp
Amanda Wyss
Nick Corri
Johnny Depp

Plot:
From modern horror master Wes Craven (Scream, Scream 2) comes a timeless shocker that remains the standard bearer for terror.

Nancy (Heather Langenkamp) is having grisly nightmares. Something monstrous wants to kill her. Meanwhile, her high-school friends, who are having the very same dream, are being slaughtered in their sleep by the hideous fiend of their shared nightmare. When the police ignore her explanation, she herself must confront the killer in his shadowy realm.

Featuring John Saxon (Enter The Dragon) and Johnny Depp in his first starring role and mind-bending special effects, this horror classic gave birth to one of the most infamous undead villains in cinematic history. Reportedly naming Freddy Krueger after a kid who had bullied him in school, writer-director Craven hatches a shock-fest from hell that "goes straight to the heart of terror" (Seattle Times).

Extras:
Scene Access
Audio Commentary
Production Notes
DVD-ROM Content

My Thoughts:
The A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise has always been one of my favorite. And this first one always been my favorite in the franchise. Matter of fact... I would even say it is one of my favorite horror movies of all time! This has a couple actors in it that I am very familiar with. Of course there is a young Johnny Depp. And then there is Heather Langenkamp... who I remember well as one of the children on the sitcom Just the Ten of Us. While still sarcastic... in this one Freddy Krueger is played a bit more straight... as they didn't add as much comedy to the character as the later ones did. Though I do like the later ones as well.

Dungeons and Dragons
The general premise of the show is that a group of children are pulled into the "Realm of Dungeons & Dragons" by taking a magical dark ride trip on an amusement park roller coaster. Invariably, the children try to return home, but often take detours to help people, or find that their fates are intertwined with the fate of others.

The Night of No Tomorrow
Season 1 - Episode 1
The group finds Merlin, looking for a magic spell to get home Presto casts a spell only to release a horde of dragons attacking the nearby village.

My Thoughts:
This is a cartoon I used to watch back when I was a teen. I bought the DVD set for pure nostalgic reasons alone. When I saw the set so cheap I just couldn't help myself. The show is not as good as I remember it.. but it is entertaining enough and gives enough nostalgic value that it is worth the $9.86 I paid for the set. I never realized it when I was a kid... but it is now so obvious that the actor supplying the voice for Eric is none other then Donny Most (Ralph Mouth on Happy Days).

Title: A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge
Year: 1985
Director: Jack Sholder
Rating: R
Length: 85 Min.
Video: Anamorphic Widescreen 1.85:1
Audio: English: Dolby Digital: Mono, English: Dolby Digital: 5.1
Subtitles: English

Stars:
Mark Patton
Kim Myers
Robert Rusler
Clu Gulager
Hope Lange
Marshall Bell

Plot:
Five years have passed since Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) was sent howling back to hell. But now, a new kid on Elm Street is being haunted every night by gruesome visions of the deadly dream stalker. And if his twisted soul takes possession of the boy's body, Freddy will return from the dead to wreak bloody murder and mayhem upon the entire town.

When A Nightmare on Elm Street made a killing, horror fans shrieked for more. Soon the diabolic Freddy was resurrected with a vengeance - along with some of the most terrifying special effects ever to splatter the screen. Look for Robert Englund minus his Freddy face in the opening sequence. He's a real scream!

Extras:
Scene Access
Production Notes
Interactive Games
DVD-ROM Content

My Thoughts:
Even though I do still feel this is a decent movie... it is my least favorite of the Elm Street movies. I can't even place my finger on what it is that I don't care for... just something about this one that didn't sit well with me. Freddy Krueger is still played pretty straight in this one. Hmmmm... makes me wonder if they didn't add the comedy to him because of the ratings/reviews that this one got.

The Wrath of Brainiac
Season 1 - Episode 3
Brainiac  develops android duplicates of Superman and Wonder Woman in an attempt to seek revenge on the Superfriends.

My Thoughts:
Not bad episode. Darkseid continues his obsession with Wonder Woman. If I remember correctly this goes on for this entire incarnation of The Super Friends. At least in this one Firestorm wasn't the center of attention like he was the last 2 episodes.

Born the bastard son of a hundred maniacs, demented killer Freddy Krueger is back for fresh victims in this hallucinatory shocker co-written by original creator Wes Craven (Scream, Scream 2).

The last of the Elm Street kids are now at a psychiatric ward where Freddy haunts their dreams with unspeakable horrors. Their only hope is dream researcher and fellow survivor Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp of the original Nightmare), who helps them battle the supernatural psycho on his own hellish turf.

Starring Patricia Arquette (Ed Wood, True Romance) and Academy Award®-nominee Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix, Hoodlum) and directed by Chuck Russell (The Mask, Eraser), "Dream Warriors is both a horrific and hysterical trip!" (L.A. Herald-Examiner).

My Thoughts:
This is another of my favorite "Nightmare" movies. I love all the things the kids learned they could do in their dreams. Plus this one has one of my favorite actresses in it... Patricia Arquette. I have been a fan of hers since the first time I saw her TV Series "Medium". This movie is the start of Freddy being more comical. Which I don't mind at all... but I do think I liked how he was in the first part better.

My all time favourite cartoon series was "The Mysterious Cities of Gold"

From the UK Overview -

Quote:
It is the 16th century. From all over Europe great ships sale west to conquer the New World, the Americas. These men eager to seek their fortune, to find new adventures in new lands. They long to cross uncharted seas and discover unknown countries. To find secret gold on a mountain trail high in the Andes. They dream of following the path of the setting sun that leads to Eldorado, and the Mysterious Cities Of Gold.

Three children - Esteban, Tao and Zia - set out on an adventure across the Americas to find the Mysterious Cities of Gold. Neither Esteban, a Spanish orphan who can command the sun, and Zia, an Inca girl kidnapped from her people, have any interest in gold. Their only dream is that their quest will lead them to their missing fathers, and they hope that the strange medallions they both wear may hold the key to the cities' location. Tao, the last descendent of the legendary empire of Hiva, believes the cities could reveal long-lost secrets about his heritage and the strange jar he has been left by his ancestors. They are joined on their journey by Spanish navigator Mendoza, and his two sailing friends Sancho and Pedro - men who seek to plunder the cities of its wealth. With the aid of the magnificent Golden Condor, their adventure takes them to the empire of the Incas, being ravaged by the invading Spanish; to the vast Amazon rain forest, where they encounter fierce female warriors; and finally to the land of the Mayas, far to the north. But they are not alone in their quest - with treasure-hungry Spaniards, greedy Mayan traitors and tyrannical Olmecs hoping to ensure they never find their way to the Mysterious Cities of Gold.

It's 39 episodes & unlike most cartoons of today, there is a plot that runs throughout the series!!

I was going to suggest a second series done by some of the same people but searching suggests the DVD has been discontinued.

In the fall of 1985, the final version of Hanna-Barbera's Super Friends premiered. The Super Friends (now called the Super Powers Team) were once again headquartered at the Hall of Justice (which had been redesigned for this series to appear more dome-like and seemingly, larger) in Metropolis, and battled such familiar foes as Darkseid, Lex Luthor, and Scarecrow.

Except where noted as a short, each episode was 30 minutes long. The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians lasted only one season on ABC, marking the end of Hanna-Barbera's 12-year run of the Super Friends.

The Seeds of Doom
Season 1 - Episode 1
After single-handedly capturing Superman's perennial nemesis Lex Luthor, the bionic Cyborg is invited to join the Super Powers Team—but surprisingly turns down the offer. Anxious to have someone his own age as a fellow Team member, the nuclear-powered Firestorm seeks out Cyborg to learn the reason for his reticence. But it will take the intervention of Darkseid and his Parademons, to say nothing of some horrific-looking sea pods, to make Cyborg change his mind.

My Thoughts:
This latest version of Super Friends sees the addition of Cyborg. I liked how they handled him joining the team. He wasn't thrilled with the idea like Firestorm was. He wanted to live a normal life. In his case he joins out of necessity instead of desire. I also liked how he and firestorm works together. They compliment each other very well. Also got to see some old favorites that has not been in many of the other series... like Aquaman and Hawkman. Though they were not as prominently shown as some of the others.

My Thoughts:
I have loved it since I first saw it when I was just a teen. I absolutely love the supped up wheel chair... The Silver Bullet! I really enjoyed the scene when he first got it... finding out just how fast it went. I believe Stephen King's take on the werewolf legend is just right on the spot. And I liked who the werewolf turned out to be. While it is not what I would call a gory movie... there is a scene or two that shows it's fair share of blood. There was nothing about this movie that was not just plain enjoyable. It is definitely one of my favorite werewolf movies. Unfortunately this is just a bare bones DVD... no extras what so ever. I would have liked to at the very least seen the Theatrical Trailer on the disc. I imagine there will be many people that does not agree with the below rating... but what can I say... I just love this movie. And it is my rating... so there!

Movie Central HD  ran this title in High def this past week & as well as in 2.35 (rather than 1.78)  and I have to say haven't seen this title since it's initial  P&S release on VHS.. It was great viewing this again,
in the way King would have wanted us to see it..
