I have two main sorting patterns: 1) Alphabetical, though I do have TV on DVD and my Disney cartoons in a separate spot. Series are generally together, like you mentioned, but I go back and forth with the James Bond movies.

2) Since I ran out of room...everything that doesn't fit on the shelves are in piles/random places.    One day I WILL have enough storage. I really will!  I use profiler a lot with this so I can easily find those that are in odd spots.

I've thought about different ways of sorting...mainly by genre, but I've always come to the conclusion that it's a lot easier just doing it by the alphabet.  That way it's easy enough to go to the "L"s and find the movie I'm looking for rather than trying to think...well, it could be drama or action or...and then going to the right spot.

I only have 2 blu's right now, and those are combos, so right now they are with the Disney movies. At this point, I think I'd just keep those in with the regular dvds since I don't have too many but maybe after collecting quite a few, I'll separate them out just to get them looking uniform on the shelf.

First in first out.

I found out a long time ago, trying to adjust continuously to alphabetize was just not a very efficient way to do it.

What I do, I take a movie in and assign a location.  That location is based on what case shelf and position that movie occupies.  Then I update my listings in a book that I keep.  If people want to peruse my movies, they pick up the binder and look.  Alphabetically.  Once they decide on the movie, I go to the location that movie is in and retrieve it.  It also goes back into that spot.

This prevents me from continuously resorting my DVD's

Because my DVD's are scattered as a result of no decent central cabinet to hold them all, sorting for me is a bit... complex.

Ordinarily, they are sorted into the following groups:

First, for DVD's that I have not finished entirely (even if it's only a single 5-minute featurette reaining to watch), I have a small rack sitting next to my computer.

Next, a large rack holds the live-action DVD's that I enjoy the most of which are also in a standard sized keep case. The keep case issue is because the rack holds DVD's from top to bottom. Each section can hold 5 keep cases (meaning you have to lift as many as 4 up to get to the bottom one). I hate this rack, but it was the only one I could find that fit within the area needed. Putting larger cases in this rack adds other problems.

On a second rack, my boxed sets are all stacked together at the top.

Next are most of the remaining live action movies.

Next shelf has movies I don't really care for (mostly gift DVD's)

All animated movies are currently stacked on the floor so that when my nieces or young cousins come to visit, they won't go rummaging through all DVD's like a tornado.

Duplicates are currently stacked off in another area.

So you could call it organized normally only in that they are siting somewhere.




.. but not right now. Right now I have all of them stacked on the floor in two huge piles trying to reorganize as well as trying to find a bigger cabinet for them all together within the limited space available.

I used to sort by a rough genre pattern but went back to alphabetical. Starting with the number titles and ending with Z.

The only things that stand apart are box sets and Blu-rays.

And I don't mix series and movies.

Alphabetical by case type.

I also sort by Blu-ray and DVD. Both are in alphabetical order. Under DVD, Box sets and Tv series are in their own locations lol

Alphabetical by original English title, for non-American/English movies by the title I remember best. Movie series are together (Romeros "Living Dead", dollar trilogy,...), TV series are seperate and unsorted.
