I actually use the Benno CD/DVD towers and have about 10 of the bolted together, at £20 they were a very cheap way of storing nearly a 1000 DVD's and still have them on show.

Any suggestions what to use for the raising (cheap and reliable)? Since you seem to have experience with this approach, I figure it's easier to ask than to toss around ideas (yeah, I'm lazy, I know and am sorry...)

The Malm is nice, but I must admit I like to keep my DVD's on display. What's the point of keeping all the cases etc if they are locked away in a drawer.

I have one of the older style Billy's which is 97cm x 211cm and 32cm Deep. It is full I can't fit any more DVD's in I get about 62-64 DVD's per shelf, but I had NEVER even thought about raising up back half of the shelf, I always thought it was a waste of such a nice deep shelf unit.

I am going to start working on getting the 2nd half raised, although it means I need to move the position of some of my shelfs somewhat. At the moment I have 7 shelf's but they are not all evenly spread the top 3 only have space for 1 layer of DVD's as I moved them closer together.

That's what I did. Therefore I didn't double stack, but I keep my entire CD-collection behind DVDs as stoppers  . Naturally I have a location list for the CDs so that I know from which shelf to look for any particular CD.

Extra money increases the per DVD storage price disproportionately.

Instead I'd rather rotate some DVDs by 90°, like this:



Please note the perfect horizontal fit of 4 DVDs in a 80cm Billy.

In this one shelf are 80 DVDs, with everything visible. 160 DVDs if it's only about storage, so 960 in a fully loaded Billy for only 38 EUR (about 0,04 EUR per DVD).

Billy is very customizable.

Those are very nice shelves, there are no ikea's anywhere close to where i live though.
I use something similar to what themoviemaster is using. The pic is from the collection thread. 

I use Billy bookcases and am in need of yet another!! Just where to put the new Billy.
