| Posted: | | | | I expected True Grit to take a few of its 10 nominations, though.
And at directing I didn't expect newcomer Tom Hooper to best the long time professionals he was running against: Fincher and the Coens. BTW, why wasn't Nolan nominated in this category for "Inception"? | | | Lutz | | | Last edited: by Darxon |

| Posted: | | | | I wasn't surprised about True Grit. If it wasn't in a technical category against Inception, it was in others with odds on favorites like The Social Network and The King's Speech.
As for Nolan, it was perplexing how Inception got nods for Best Picture and Original Screenplay but not Best Director. Of course, there's limited spots and the Coen Brothers, Hooper and Fincher were automatic so only two more slots and Nolan was just the odd man out. | | | Last edited: by The Movieman |

| Posted: | | | | Seems like a good selection of winners. Just one result blew my mind: Best Picture: The King's Speech over Inception? WTF? Inception was by far the movie with the best cinematography, script and directing out there. (also, I agree that best director should've gone to Nolan who did a terrific job keeping such a complexly interwoven story together) | | | Blu-ray collection DVD collection My Games My Trophies | | | Last edited: by Taro |

| Posted: | | | | I wouldn't have been surprised if Inception was in the top 5 in voting. #1 was King's Speech, #2 The Social Network and (guessing now, but knowing Hollywood), #3 The Fighter, #4 Black Swan, #5 True Grit after that it can go in any order, though Winter's Bone would probably be #10.
Inception doesn't fit the Oscar mold in the bigger categories but it looked great (Wally Pfister has been nominated three times before for Batman Begins, The Prestige and The Dark Knight) so he's kind of a staple in the last 5 years.
That said, I know plenty felt Roger Deakins was overdue being nominated 9 times w/o a win dating back to 1994 with The Shawshank Redemption. In fact, he was nominated twice in 2008 for The Assassination of Jesse James and No Country for Old Men and I'd bet if he weren't nominated for Jesse James, he'd win it that year but the votes got split (IMO). I'm not completely on board as I've loved Pfister's work, but Deakins' cinematography is brilliant. I wasn't wild about No Country for Old Men, but it was gorgeous to look at.
Side question: With The Dark Knight Rises being Nolan's last Batman movie, do you think it will break the wall for a superhero movie getting some major nods for the 2013 Oscars? Obviously Ledger was nominated and won for TDK but acting is a bit easier when you have a performance and character like The Joker (heck, Depp was nominated for his performance as Jack Sparrow). Obviously it'll get a Best Picture nod (TDK is one of the reasons they went to 10 BP nominations in 2009) but also Directing and Adapted Screenplay (the technical categories like Sound and Sound Editing are almost guaranteed and Pfister will once again be nominated for Cinematography). But will the Academy in some fashion reward Nolan for the complete trilogy as they did with Jackson and the Return of the King? That is, if TDKR is even close to the quality that TDK was. | | | Last edited: by The Movieman |

| Posted: | | | | It's nice to see a decent variety of winners at least instead the single biggest budget movie or "most popular" film winning almost all of them. | | | If at first you don't succeed, skydiving isn't for you.

How many people do you think agreed with Driving Miss Daisy being the best film of 89. |

I think it was a combination of being high and not giving a crap. From what I have seen, that is just his personality. The highlight for me...Kirk Douglas. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom. I think it was a combination of being high and not giving a crap. I believe the weed was medicinal, since he recently had his arm cut off and re-attached. There's nothing like the method actor. | | | We're on a mission from God.
