Why not use Open Office instead?
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Who said anything about piracy?
There are countries where can give away something that you paid for. And no, I'm not interested in whether Microsoft likes that or not if it is my right. Unfortunately I don't have a recent key I could give away.

But I too would rather advise to use OpenOffice or LibreOffice.

Have you talked to your school about if they sell it? I was able to buy it from mine for around $25. It was over 15 years ago, but have a feeling some schools still do that. They get a bulk rate and are able to give it to students at a discount.

Why are you angry?  If he could afford to buy it, I am sure he wouldn't have asked if anybody had a key he could have.

Where, exactly, is he doing that?  I know I have purchased Office with more than one license, so that everyone in my family can have it on their systems...it is cheaper than buying 6 individual copies.  It is possible that other people have done the same thing, and have an odd number of people, so might have an extra license that they are not using.  What's the harm in asking?

Because it's asking for something for nothing. When you buy a license you are buying it for yourself or the members of your household; and, at least here in the UK, when you do so you are expressly forbidden to give a license away outside of your household or sell it.

I'm unemployed and I wanted the new version of Office (prior to coming into my inheritance) so I sold a load of stuff to buy it.

I still don't get it.  He's not hurting anybody by asking so I, personally, see no reason to get angry.

Because, in my opinion it's akin to piracy.

Why does it bother you that I was annoyed anyway?
