Makes a difference? Latest scam to get us to buy the same movie again? | | | Tom. |

| Posted: | | | | Not now... but later, sure.
Blu-rays started out +10 years ago, and back then you had some people saying "OMG! The higher quality is amazing!" and others saying, "Eh... I don't see enough of a difference to care. DVD is just fine to me." But now, most people have HD TVs in their homes, Blu-ray players upscale DVDs to some degree, so it's like sneaking slowly away from DVDs even though DVDs are still sold.
Another 10-15 years everyone will be wanting an 80" 4K television because they believe that Blu-ray quality sucks.
(I mean, we already have people who wish their 4" smart phone screen had a resolution higher than DVD quality for crying out loud.) | | | If at first you don't succeed, skydiving isn't for you.

So far I have not seen a single 3D movie where the 3D effect has had any influence on my enjoyment or not-enjoyment of the movie. 3D is not like better special effects. It's just "bluh" for me. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

When in fact, they already do. The iPad screen already has higher resolution than Blu-ray even. It's mad, really. | | | Achim [諾亞信; Ya-Shin//Nuo], a German in Taiwan. | Posted: | | | | It'll be interesting to see more about these as they are released. The first release of Taxi Driver was from a 4K Scan. Is this new release just the same transfer minus the bonus content? I doubt that they would do a new scan of such a recent release.... | | | HDTV: 52" Toshiba Regza 52XV545U AVR: Onkyo TR-707 Speakers: Paradigm Monitor 7 v6, CC-190 & Atom Monitors Subwoofer: Definitive Technology ProSub 800 BD/DVD: Oppo BDP-93 (Region Free) HD PVR: Motorola DXC3400 500GB w/ 1TB Expander BD/DVD/Game: 250GB PS3 Slim DVD/Game: 250GB XBox 360 Elite Special Edition (Black) Game: Wii Remote: Logitech Harmony One w/ PS3 Adapter WHS: Acer H341 Windows Home Server |

From what I understand, this is supposed to be an exact transfer that is as good as the source...meaning, if the source is 4K the transfer is 4K. On current releases of Sony Blu-rays, the source has been down converted from 2160p to 1080p. The 4K releases are supposed to be full 2160p. This article has some good information but, from what I can tell, unless you have 4K compatible equipment, there is no point in upgrading. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. Correct. In the years leading up to Blu-Ray, DVD's would often say "Mastered in HD" on the cover. Same thing here. | | | 99.9% of all cat plans consist only of "Step 1." | | | Last edited: by Grendell |

| Posted: | | | | Yes, only the mastering differs, which may or may not result in a measurable improvement in quality, strongly dependent on the quality of the prior release's transfer. What I'd like to see is an analysis of any of these releases to see if there is a measurable improvement. | | | Invelos Software, Inc. Representative |

You are correct, I misread one sentence which changed how I understood it. It seems that they have been edited in 4K resolution in Sony’s studios and downscaled to Full HD. While they do say it is an improvement in color, I still don't think it is worth the upgrade. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
