| Posted: | | | | ..being this is the 50th anniversary ("this week") November 7th 1963 at the Cinerama dome in Hollywood .. , I have been watching the boards here and have been waiting till today to post this news if in case of , anyone who might have missed the Big news coming out from Criterion Collections that this January 21 they will after many many years of restoration with the likes of Robert A Harris and others that this set will contain the long awaited 197 min version of It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World ( which happens to be in my favourite 5 films ( genres) of all time.! I have had in the past owned a pan and scan 154 min vhs/ then the letterbox version / then the Laser disc box set ( which had the trims/outakes making up the 192 LV version, terrible quality at that time)., then the 2001 standard release of the title on dvd ,, then last year the Blu ray disc of the same title .. and now .. ( & don't let my wife find out).. this Criterion combo two disc set which will hold the original 154 and the the new constructed 197 min which dfor the first time will contain the police calls played during intermission .. this was a no brainer Blind Buy .... ( aopparently the documentrary .. 'and now for something a little less serious' will NOT be in the set so don't give away your older titles yet .. I have always wished for this title to be release as this in my lifetime .. and it looks like my wish has come true .. | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. | Posted: | | | | I knew that but thought I'd show some respect for Ken and not advertise other forums .. on his forum .. Unless he doesnt mind for the future ...
BTW Is there anyone here ( albeit by these dismal thread responses ( thanks Marty and Scott ) .. is there any here who maybe has never actually viewed IAMMMMW in its entirety or at least understood the very importance of this comedy masterpiece from Stanley Kramer..?
just wondering ...... | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD—Stanley Kramer Switches To Slapstick Comedy Stanley Kramer, normally a director of serious social issue dramas, often revolving around courtroom situations, very successfully switches his producing talents to broad slapstick comedy that also satirizes our own selfish natures. Kramer allows his diverse cast to let their very recognizable individual comic styles dominate their characters—from the loud brashness of Merman, to the coyness of Silvers, to the wackiness of Winters, all counterbalanced by the common sense and decency of Spencer Tracy, traits that uncharacteristically are discarded at the climax of the story. Capt. C.G. Culpeper SPENCER TRACY J. Algernon Hawthorne. TERRY-THOMAS Lennie Pike JONATHAN WINTERS IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD is director Stanley Kramer's slapstick comic epic about greed in a modern society gone crazy. Kramer produced this film on a massive scale, employing a huge cast of Hollywood's top comic actors, utlized dozens of southern California locations and highlighted the breakneck action with some of the most numerous and hair-raising stunts in the history of the industry. William and Tania Rose's story begins with a line of vehicles traveling on a desert highway outside of Palm Springs. The passengers include J. Russell Finch (Milton Berle) the president of a seaweed company, his unsympathetic wife Emmeline (Dorothy Provine), his irascible mother-in-law Mrs. Marcus (Ethel Merman), a dentist Melville Crump (Sid Caesar) and his wife Monika (Edie Adams), two men in a furniture van (Mickey Rooney and Jonathan Winters) and ex-con Smiler Grogan (Jimmy Durante). Grogan is in a real hurry and driving like a maniac. He loses control of his car and runs off the road. The old crook is dying as the passengers of the other vehicles gather around him. Just before he "kicks the bucket" (literally), he tells the group of strangers that he hid thousands of dollars of stolen cash "under the big W" in the Pacific coastal city of Santa Rossita, 250 miles away. These strangers, brought together by fate, rationally try to come up with plans for recovering the money and equitably dividing it up. But they instinctively cannot trust each other and start to argue. Eventually the temptation of "every man for himself" is too strong to resist and they all make a mad dash for their vehicles and start an incredible chase to "the Big W," not knowing exactly what it might be. | | | We don't need stinkin' IMDB's errors, we make our own. | Posted: | | | | I guess there was a reason I never bought this one on DVD or BD. Actually, I haven't seen it since a rent on VHS in the early 1980s. I'm sure it was pan&scan back then so I've never seen it in widescreen. | | | First registered: February 15, 2002 |

| Posted: | | | | I've never seen this one either, but know how well loved it is. I considered picking up the Fox/MGM BD, but this one seems to be the one to own. I don't know if this film will really be my cup of tea, but I figure I'd use my money to reward the hard works of Criterion, Robert Harris, and all the die-hard fans who made this release possible. | | | My DVD/Blu-ray Collection My Letterboxd Page |

| Posted: | | | | This will be a double dip for me. I wish we could get a restored roadshow version of The Alamo as well, but I guess it's too late for that now. A crying shame. | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users. Gunnar |
