| Posted: | | | | My wife and I have been experimenting with movie night formats.
With all the investments I have made in media and equipment, it is a lot more fun to share with friends and get the kudos, than to just sit and watch alone. Seems like a waste.
But here's the rub: we can't decide on a successful format.
- My wife thinks of it as a dinner party, and oh by the way - watch a movie. It's a big production. Last time, our friends came, they took over the kitchen and cooked a full meal. By the time we got to the movie, we were all stuffed and sleepy. - I think of it as: "hey, come over and bring pop corn or pizza, watch a movie and get out!" But then I always hold people around for a couple more hours spinning music videos, movie trailers, family photos and videos stored on my HTPC.
Both formats wind up with folks leaving the house well past midnight, stuffed, tired and maybe not so in the mood to do it again ... but they love the big screen and my sound!!!
So, I ask for any other ideas out there - how do you run movie nights, if you do them at all? If you don't, of course there is no need to post, unless you have an interesting story as to why you stopped. | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. | Posted: | | | | Well I used to do this a lot more than I do now. We cracked a bottle of champagne and then watched a movie. So we were done mostly round 11.
Now I only do this once or twice a year. We get some take out food like Chinese or Pizza. So we are not completely stuffed, and there is no work in the kitchen.
But in the end it's still food & movie, so I don't think this will help you much. | | | View my collection at http://www.chriskepolis.be/home/dvd.htm

Don't show all the extra stuff. |

| Posted: | | | | We have movie night every Saturday at our house. Depending on schedules, we get anywhere from 5-20 attendees, plus our own household. Arrival times are staggered, so we start at 7 and usually hit play around 8:30. In the mean time we catch up on things, drink coffee, play pool, and eat dessert. Gerri is addicted to all things culinary, so she has a blast trying out new recipes for movie night. During the movie it's sodas and popcorn (the real stuff, cooked in coconut oil!).
It's been a tradition for about 9 years now, and I don't think we've skipped more than 15 Saturdays total in that time. | | | Invelos Software, Inc. Representative | | | Last edited: by Ken Cole |

Seems like the key to success, as with most things, is commitment by the participants and the host making the whole thing fun. You get all that done - 7 to 11PM. | | | Thanks for your support. But how do you accommodate 20+? Do you have a small movie theater at home, or do you project on a big screen in the backyard? </envy> |

Do you have a small movie theater at home, or do you project on a big screen in the backyard? </envy> We carved out a theater into the basement when we built our house. It has ten recliners, two futons for the teens, and beanbags up front for the younger ones. We very rarely have over 20, but when we do we squeeze in a couple of chairs on the side. The only hard part is picking a movie that nobody has seen (or, if so, is willing to see again), and that fits the audience age and tastes. Good thing I have access to a database of such things. | | | Invelos Software, Inc. Representative |

My wife turns it from "Pop by for a movie" to "have a meal, and chat. We can watch a movie if you insist, but please don't show our friends anything too freaky or they won't talk to us again." The compromise for us I think will be themed nights. e.g. Luchador (Mexican wrestling) movie night with burritos Japanese night with sushi I'd like to have a black & white night (clothing is easy, food is a little harder). | | | Adelaide Movie Buffs (info on special screenings, contests, bargains, etc. relevant to Adelaideans... and contests/bargains for other Aussies too!) |
