But nobody has ever talked about stopping climate change! Nobody wants to! As Rico says, it's cyclic. But the point is that man has sped up the process, and is continuing to speed up the process. To continue the train analogy, the train normally goes at a leisurely rate and is completely capable of making the turn at the far end. But if we're speeding the train up to breakneck speed - how well do you think it's going to make that turn? The fight against CO2 emissions has never been about stopping a natural event or trying to override nature, it's about trying to stop man from screwing up nature completely! |

| Posted: | | | | I understood your point, pauls and that is where I part company with you. Global Warming is more or less accepted, what is NOT universally accepted is just exactly how much of a role man plays in it. I know all of Al Bore's numbers and statistics, I also know he cherry-picked them to suit his ends. Even IF man is 100% responsible which is a dubious theory, we should still be concentrating on survival, while we make whatever adjustments we can make, though I would expect that whatever adjustments we make will not prevent Mother Nature from exercising her will. I see what Al Gore and other like him doing is simply misdirection, to get people to focus on "it's ALL our fault" and do nothing more than point fingers at each other because man is evil. I have yet to hear one word from the Vice President relative to steps that should be taken to simply survive whatever is coming, just dithering. I learned 45 years ago that much Florida would be underwater by 2050, because Florida is SINKING, that was long before there was any concern over Global Warming and even before the thought of Global Cooling was expressed as a concern.
Is Man hastening the sinking of Florida by all the added mass that state carries which is all man-made. Long Island is rising out of the sea (rebounding, as it were) because during the last great Ice Age, it was covered by a huge sheet of ice up to a mile thick, which pushed it down, with the weight of that sheet of ice removed.....but man has added much mass to the island is he slowing the natural rebound...maybe. As the island rebounds it displaces water, which causes water levels to rise. What will be the effects or what kind of disasters might we see when Mt. Everest, which is still getting taller, finally collapses under its own mass, I guess one day we will learn that answer.

You're right. I forgot about that one, or my brain intentionally blocked it out. Not sure which. | | | Last edited: by nolesrule |

But nobody has ever talked about stopping climate change! Nobody wants to! Actually, that is exactly what Al Gore is saying. He, and his groups, are raising money to "Help Stop Global Warming." In addition, I did a google search on 'global warming'. 5, out of the 8, sponsored links were 'fight', 'stop' or 'prevent global warming. At second look, it is possible that you meant nobody in these forums has talked about it. If that is the case, then, nevermind. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom. Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand. The Centauri learned this lesson once. We will teach it to them again. At second look, it is possible that you meant nobody in these forums has talked about it. If that is the case, then, nevermind. Option 2 was correct... However, doing a bit more research on the actual terminology, it seems that "global warming" as a phrase is commonly used to describe only the warming attributed to human influence. Therefore, if that is how they interpret the phrase, then "stopping" global warming is something that a lot of people want to work towards. Indeed, even the UN use the phrase "climate change" for human influenced changes, and "climate variability" for natural changes (from Wikipedia) |

| Posted: | | | | Actually, I believe the term "climate change" was addopted rather than global warming as a CYA just in case the "concensus" for global warming is wrong. We can still have a crisis if we call it climate change and the data proves the temperatures are stable or falling.
Our society is crisis driven. I guess you can blame this on the educational system and television creating a societal attention span of something shorter than a few weeks. People don't reason, they feel. So-called scientists like the ones used by Algore when making his movie cherry pick the data to fit the conclusion they want. The more people jump on the "crisis of the day" bandwagon, the more of these crisies we will have, because the politians see the value of passing legislation to avert, fix, or abate a crisis to their future election, regardless of the long-term effects. (Look at the so-called recession in the U.S. that we MUST FIX today with unemployment at less than 5%)
As each new crisis is "discovered" you may safely assume that the source of the crisis is the activities of the U.S. and other developed democracies which will be considered wrong and their evil behavior must be stopped or the world will either boil, freeze, drown, or dry up and blow away. | | | Kevin |

GDP = consumption + investment + (government spending) + (exports - imports). Unemployment is only one of many factors. Consumer confidence is down. Consumer spending is down due to higher fuel prices. The housing market is in crisis and the Stock Markets are in decline. We have an unimaginable trade deficit and we are spending 1 billion dollars a week on the Iraq war. Something's knocking on our door...and it ain't Avon. | | | My WebGenDVD online Collection |

If you guess I don't have any use for the UN, you would be correct, nor do a lot of Americans. Libya on the human rights committee...now there is a joke. Skip | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! Something has to be done to stimulate growth. Whether it be tax incentives for companies or $800 - $1,000 p/family in the form of a tax rebate...something must be done. Congress hasn't finalized their package yet but we should find out the details next week and I can assure you that Wall Street is very interested in exactly what it will be. | | | My WebGenDVD online Collection |

Excuse me but this is the General Discussion thread is it not? The economy has a lot to do with how a nation can allocate it's resources in order to, as some would say, "Fight Global Warming". Beg to differ, Max, but this is the "Gloabl Warming" thread in the "General discussion" board. Discussing economics in a seperate thread is a good call IMO as the subject requires at least an equal amount of attention better served by not mixing it up with replies to the global warming topic. | | | Lutz |
