I'm paying for 25Mbps...not quite getting it

If you haven't already, I would call Comcast and make them fix it. Usually there is a setting they can make or the lines are not clean and are bleeding the bandwidth. I had similar problems and it got fixed.

I'm in a struggle with Comcast right now. According to them, it's my outdated rental modem causing the slowdown. I simply need to order a free upgraded modem to take advantage of the higher speed. Before I do that, I need to settle my billing/service issue with them.

I'm currently paying about $165/mo for non-HD expanded basic TV, the 25Mbps internet, and phone. After speaking to their retention dept, I was offered an upgrade to HD Preferred TV, 105 Mbps internet, plus phone for $150/mo. I don't really need that internet speed, at least at this point, so that seems a bit high priced to me. This left me with 3 options: 1) take the Comcast offer, 2) switch to Fairpoint (the local competition) for a similar level of service but adding HD service (via DirectTV) for $75/mo...a real pain since we have business emails addresses with Comcast, 3) split up the services by keeping Comcast for internet only, switching the TV to DirectTV with HD service, and dropping the landline phone (which we never use anyway).

I was all in favor of option 3 and buying my own modem (Motorola SB6141 for $75) to maximize my speed & cut out the rental cost of $8/mo for the modem. When I tried to do this, Comcast offered a new lower rate of $125/mo for the same service I have now. If I go with option 3, it'll cost about the same since Comcast won't offer me anything less than $65/mo for internet only at 25Mbps. So, I'm trying to figure out if I should go for A) non-HD service + internet + phone from Comcast, or B) HD service from DirectTV + internet from Comcast + no phone. Option B means I can use the Motorola modem I mentioned since there's no phone involved. Option A means I can't use the Motorola modem and would have to continue leasing a newer Comcast modem (or find another modem that supports voice).

Sorry for the rant

They are probably correct regarding the modem. I was using a Motorola DOCSIS 2.0 cable modem until last year. I was suddenly getting random slowdowns and constantly losing a connection. Charter cable sent me a replacement Motorola DOCSIS 3.0 modem, and the problems went away.

I have Cox, and they actually told me at the time I upgraded my service that I would need a new modem. Cox doesn't do modem rentals (at least in this city, they sell them or let you purchase them elsewhere), but they went ahead and just gave it to me since I was upgrading the service and I have been with them so long.  It is a Cisco DPC3010 which is DOCSIS 3.0.

It seems to me Comcast should have known your service was incompatible at the time of upgrade since  you are renting and they know exactly what modem you have.

Cable companies always should know, but somehow don't. Take this for instance...

While I was having trouble and talking to various people at Charter tech support, they were saying it was the modem and that I would need to get a new one. So I went to Amazon and bought a brand new Motorola modem. I then called to have them set up and flash the new modem for use, and they told me that "Motorola" was not supported.

A Supervisor then told me I'd need a newer "proprietary" modem direct from them, that ones purchased in stores would not work, and she would send a free one out by FedEx.

She said that somebody should have told me before that I would need to get a new one from them. I talked to at least 5 different tech people before that...and none of them said anything like that. 2 of them even said to just go out and buy one!

So... two days later I get a box from FedEx. I open it up and what is it? The same exact model of Motorola modem I'd purchased! Same sealed box, model number, everything.

Thankfully I was able to return the identical modem that I'd bought to Amazon, after explaining that my Cable company were complete idiots.

In their defense, Comcast did contact me a few weeks ago and told me I needed to upgrade my modem to take advantage of higher speeds. They've been so unhelpful with me lately though, that I'm trying to distance myself from them as much as possible. I just had DirectTV installed this morning (hooray...I now have HD service! ) and with the new modem I bought over the weekend, that will give me the higher internet speed. Tomorrow, all Comcast equipment will be returned to them. I guess I'll lose my landline phone service, but I don't really care about that anyway.

Charter recently doubled my base Internet package to 60mbps, so here's the new results:

I had 2 downloads going at the time of the test, so I guess it's pretty good. Upload speeds are still slow and about the same as before however.

That's the nearest server to me listed on Ookla, and it shows up as the default... horrible Ping though.

True!
Sadly they messed up with the promised 6 MBit Upload-bandwidth (    )

Evidently Comcast upped the ante from 50 to 120 and didn't even mention it to us.

Looks like my Ping is much better now, and the default server is now different. My wireless (through router) also seems to be faster through 5G.

I assume Charter is done with their Spectrum upgrading here now.
