| Posted: | | | | I have exactly two titles that have disc rot, the original 2-disc UK editions of Terminator and Silence of the Lambs. From the same manufacturer (indeed, the same as that of the aforementioned Rocky set) and part of the very batch that brought up the issue of disc rot in the first place, and the ONLY instance of the issue I can remember reading about. There was a replacement program but I never bothered, having other editions of both for various reasons. I haven't touched the majority of my discs since first watching them, but I've never found another one with any kind of "rot".
My question is, how is this issue appearing on Blu-Ray a reason for a warning thread about DVD/HD DVD? I don't see how this helps anyone become WellInformed... |

This is a poorly disguised attempt at showing how Blu-ray is the better choice over HD DVD. Notice he says that, because HD DVDs are made the same way standard DVDs are, that they are susceptible to Disc Rot. He goes on to try and discredit the claims of disc rot on Blu-ray discs with nothing but his uninformed opinion. If you read the article he linked to it states, "First up is the issue of "disc rot," movies on DVD that become unplayable after some period of time." For them to become "unplayable after some period of time," they must have been playable to begin with. That being the case, this statement: "Disc rot is something one should notice right away." and this statement, "surely the disc would not have played in the BD (Blu-ray Disc) player at all." can not be true. If they were true, disc rot would not be a problem. You would simply take your disc back and have it replaced. The reason disc rot is a problem is because it happens over time. A disc that was watchable when you purchased it, is not longer playable. This is a good illustration of the problem I have with Ascended_Saiyan. He provides a link to a document and then makes statements contrary to what that document says. If that was your sole purpose, the last two paragraphs in your original post were not needed. Those two paragraphs were an obvious attempt to cast doubt on the claims of disc rot on Blu-ray discs. | Posted: | | | | I have had 3 instances of disc rot - 1 on a CD, which was replaced as I could prove I had purchased it locally and the local manufacturer had never encountered anything like it before and wanted to do some tests. They replaced the disc and gave me 2 others too to apologise etc. The 2 DVD's I could not rememebr where I had purchased them - they were 'Cool Runnings' and 'The Parent Trap' (With Lindsay Lohan). Both were relatively new when this occured and as I could not prove purchase etch I was unable to get them replaced. I eventually replaced both myself and the new copies are fine so far. | | | <---------Mithrandir, Laverne and Shirley Caroline |

| Posted: | | | | I sufferd disc rot on the 1st 3 Lethal Weapon films, and as the discs were 3 years old when I noticed, it was easier and cheaper just to buy them again as a box set and throw the old ones away

| Posted: | | | | The 1-10% rot rate on standard DVD is obviously made up out of thin air. If the failure rate were anywhere near that high people would be screaming bloody murder.
My collection is right around 5000, and these are the cases of disc rot I've experienced:
Suspiria Heathers SE Frankenstein Created Woman The Witches
All from a known problem with a batch of glue from Anchor Bay's pressing company (the name of which I forget). That's less than 1/10 of 1% of my collection, and AB replaced them all for me. I periodically check titles that are claimed to have rot problems (early pressings of Vertigo and Contact, From the Earth to the Moon, and a few others) and no sign of any issues, so at this point I think I'm pretty safe.
I should note, that's not counting the DVD-18s from Universal's Mexican plant that wouldn't ever play properly at all---those were just defective from the start and not a rot situation where the discs played OK at first and then stopped playing. On the whole, it's a non-issue for SDVD. Whether it's more of a problem with Blu-Ray remains to be seen. | | | "This movie has warped my fragile little mind." |
