If you like Sci-Fi, I'd advise
Babylon 5
Battlestar Galactica (the new one)
Stargate SG-1
Farscape
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

As a 'real world' show I do like "Emergency Room" and "24" very much.

And in the fantasy section:
"Smallville"
"Heroes"
"Lost"
"Xena"

This thread is going to get messy!

I can't believe no-one has mentioned the-greatest-TV-show-ever-in-the-history-of-the-unoverse yet:

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Most of the time great fun, some of the time, unsurpassed genius.

Then amongst others already mentioned, I like:

24
Sopranos
Firefly
House
Shark
My Name is Earl
The X-Files (a past firm favourite that went sour after about season 5. Previous seasons were as good as TV can get sometimes.)

The UK has a handful of recent gems:

Life on Mars (this should actually be first on your list, before it gets remade )
Peep Show
Spaced (if you like Shaun of the Dead/Hot Fuzz you'll get this)
The Office
Extras

Currently America is hogging the airwaves, but go back a decade and there's a lot more UK stuff that could hold its own today like Prime Suspect or Cracker.

I haven't watched television, except for sports, PBS, and the local news, for many years. I do like to watch TV Series on DVDs though so I'm curious as to what shows are your favorites.

Twin Peaks
Twin Peaks
Twin Peaks
Twin Peaks

oh, and Twin Peaks of course...

Lars von Triers "Riget" (aka The Kingdom) is also worth a watch - this would probably qualify as a Mini-series but still...

And of course "Band of Brother" (also a mini but a damn good one!).

I just bought a friends collection of 500+ DVDs - mostly box sets and TV series. I'm not quite sure where I want to start.

500.... That's even more than my entire collection...!

Question No. 1 Can I bring the popcorn...?

Quote:
I'm off from work for a few months so I have a lot of time for movies!

Question No. 2 Where can I get me a job like that?

With the 500 DVDs I'll hit the 3,000+ mark - once I add them all to my collection! Although I already own quite a few of them, the price was unbelievable and couldn't pass it up.
Answer 1: As long as it's popped on the stove and has real butter! NO microwave stuff <shiver>
Answer 2: Have a piece of machinery fall and get your left arm crushed.    I'll be fine but I miss working!

My question - where's YOUR list?!

Battlestar Galactica (new)

When I heard they were replacing Dirk Benedict's character, Lieutenant Starbuck, with a woman, well, it completely turned me off to the new series. Starbuck pretty much defined Battlestar Galactica for me back in the late 70s.

I haven't seen any episodes of the new series so unless a fan of the original series can convince me that the remake is worth my time and money, I doubt I'll make the investment.

I was/am a big fan of the original, but I love the new one - in fact I like it more than the original.    Still feel weird/wrong saying that.

I think they have done a fantastic job of re imagining, making it sufficiently different so that it does not damage the memory of the original.

I would have hated a scene for scene remake with modern technology, but they have gone down a nice original route imo.
