If you are against players using drugs, then boycott the game. Hurt the owners in the back pocket, and you'll see them crack down on the players abusing drugs, cheating, etc.
The perfect example of that is the old Black Socks scandal. Between fans and sports writers those guys never lived that down, and the game was better for it.

Ruth certainly wasn't in the best of shape physically. And that to makes what he did amazing. You're correct Dan. Alcohol certainly didn't help Ruth's hand/eye coordination at all. In a certain sense, he wasn't cheating like they do today. This stuff today isn't called "performance enhancing drugs" for nothing. Sure Bonds has the coordination and that, but his real power comes from supplemental effects. On ESPN today (it might have been a repeat from last night) they showed Bonds' home run records from the past years, and also what his physical condition was. After McGwire and Sosa "beat" Maris' record, the next year Bonds looked at least twice as big, and then started really smacking the ball out of the park. I don't care who you are: you can't bulk up that much from October to April naturally. And they said Bonds was certain for the Hall of Fame before 1998. If he would have just kept going that way, he would have been a shoe-in for the Hall. Now if he gets in, it's a pity. His ego screwed up his legacy. I was always hoping that Ken Griffey, Jr would have beaten the record. There was much talk of it years ago, and then he just got hurt too many times. |
