The Descent was a surprisingly scary thriller, I loved it and therefore I pick it over the classic but more campy Evil Dead 2!!!

I voted for the Descent cos Evil Dead 2 has never scared me - I never thought it was meant to - isn't it a comedy?

I think the Evil Dead movies are great comedies but no horror flics, so although ED II is the better movie The Descent is scarier.

Evil Dead 2 contains too much humor to win. Would it have been the first Evil Dead movie, I would have gone with that one. But as it is, my vote goes to The Descent.

wow, I have to say I thought this round really would have gone another way. Perhaps because the ED series tends to be so heavily talked about in the likes of horror hounds. This actually really surprised me. I expected it to be a lot closer than it is now. Good show, I will close the voting on this at some point later in the day....

If it was the first Evil Dead my vote would have been different, but since is not the original I have to go with the Descent. This is for the original one, since I've never seen the american version with the different ending.

Didn't realise there was a different version. How does the US one end? Obviously please employ a spoiler function!

Rimmer, it's no surprise to me that EDII is getting a kicking. From what I can tell, especially here in the UK, Neil Marshall is getting a lot of respect for Dog Soldiers and The Descent. He's already a first class filmmaker. Evil Dead II is fun -brilliantly so- but I think The Descent is a better film all round, built to make your underpants change colour!

If I've got this right, the US version just finishes earlier than the full version. It ends when she's in the Landrover by the side of the road. So you don't get the "twist" at the end. I hope that's vague enough not to spoil things!

The jump scare scene of the Carrie (the 1976 DePalma version not the 2002 TVM) scared the living bejeesus out of me.  I had read the reviews (which didn't have spoilers, BTW) so I should have been prepared, but believe me, I wasn't ready for it.

Taken as a whole, Carrie isn't THAT scary, but that final scene...

What? That takes the bite right out! Why do studios seem to think American audiences are either too thick to understand something or too sensitive to want to understand it? Good grief.

Anyone reading this thread who fancies seeing The Descent should get the R2, no matter where they are. If you don't like the ending, you can always press "Stop". It sounds like that's all the Region 1 distributors did.

I may have this wrong, but I believe the reason given was because the US distributor wanted it left open for a possible sequel!

I am missing these two great horror films on your list:

The Beyond

and

Hell Night

They are both from 1981 and they scared the hell out of me back then.

I voted for The Descent.

Being an avid caver myself, I appreciated the story all the more.  Watched it a week before leading a caving trip in the CA foothills.  Only nasties in THAT cave turned out to be a couple of little snakes near the entrance.
