Bobb,

I am very sorry to hear of your loss. Losing a family pet can be a very traumatic event.

Many years ago, when I was a young child in fact, our pet dog Snoopy killed our pet cat Rastass after living happily with him for five years.

Dogs are territorial creatures and will defend their territory. Bear this in mind before you make a decision about Lucy. You may want to let some time pass so that your emotions aren't as raw when you make your decision.

In our case we decided that Snoopy just couldn't be trusted to live with another cat. We kept Snoopy who lived to a ripe old age as a much-loved family pet, albeit one that couldn't be trusted to live happily with a cat.

Bobb,

The only consolation that I can offer is that Dilbey is in a far better place.

Dealing with dogs with behavioral problems is difficult, but there are people out there who love to do this.

Before you put Lucy down, please check into some local rescue groups.  Be sure to be toally honest about her problems.  Someone out there will want to take her and work with her to overcome her issues, if possible.  If not, having her in the correct environment can help prevent a future tragedy.

Just think about it, before you make a final decison.

Bobb,

As someone who has an appreciation for animals and the joy they bring, and I terribly saddened to read this. I know you've heard it before but it is indeed true time will heal the deepest wounds.

I am in agreement with all -- what a tragic way to see in a new year. Do what you need to do to find peace.

That's an aweful story Bobb.  I wish you the best.  We are planning to take one of our cats on a one way trip to the vet this Friday, so I can understand part of what you're going through.

Bobb,

I am so sorry to hear about Dibley's death; I can't imagine losing a beloved pet that way. I also feel bad for Lucy; to be so afraid and lash out like that. The whole tragic incident just breaks my heart. I can not imagine what you and your family are going through.

While nothing can change what has happened and no amount of sympathy can lessen the blow, you have my sympathies and my wishes for a brighter 2008. And because I'm a helpless animal lover, too:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
I was wise once; when I was born, I cried - Welsh proverb

Bobb, my condolences. I would echo though the thoughts of others to bide your time before doing anything to/with Lucy. The loud and constant noises on New Years Eve would have driven her wild and she would have had very little, if any, control over herself.
Here is South Africa fireworks are ostensibly banned but we still get them and there are always horror stories of this kind in the days afterwards. At least you know what happened to your 2 dogs, horrible though it was. There are a lot of pet owners out there whose animals have gone missing and they have no idea whether they will be seen again.

I understand your feelings on the matter though. My Shakira is now over 19 and I am dreading the day I have to make the one way trip to the vet. She is my sunshine and I don't know what I would so without her. I have had her almost all her life and she is exremely dear to me.

Still, I hope that the rest of 2008 is better and that you have a great rest of the year!

For everyone with a dog (or three), or who likes dogs, or who just need a smile about the joys of dogs, or simply growing up, I offer a small change of disposition... a series of photos of a dog and two puppies:

I want to thank all of you who sent your condolences. I am sorry I could not reply till today. My mother died on the 2nd, so this 2008 started out very hard on me and my wife. I did not log back on to this site till yesterday, and that was only about 5 minutes.

Again Thanks to all for your support. It was good to see how many of you love your dogs.
