I do exactly the same thing.  My favourite films and the majority of TV series are on shelves the rest are in DJ boxes.

I use the same with less DVD

I prefer shelving/sorting by title, alphabetically. Having said that -- I ran out of room on my DVD shelves years ago. So I took all the silent-era DVDs and pulled them, and placed them in my first drawer (of six) that I have my CDs stored in. Those are in Production Year order, from 1877 to 1929, and alphabetical within each year.

Now that I've once again outgrown my shelves with sound-era DVDs, I'm in the middle of pulling all single-disc DVDs with no inserts (booklets, chapter-listings, etc.) off the shelves, placing the discs in 256-disc binder-like cases, and storing the DVD cases in boxes elsewhere. Maybe by April my collection with be less scattered -- unlike my piles in the living room & library, on the library shelves (where they belong), in the CD drawer, in the three or four binders.

Organized? If only wishing would allow my house to grow with my stuff...
