Windows Vista: I Officially Give Up |

| | Posted: | | | | I built myself a dual boot machine before Xmas. Dual core 3GHz, 2GB RAM, 8800GTX, Soundblaster Elite, yada, yada, Vista on one drive, XP Pro on the second and all user data on the third.
Primary boot is Vista SP1. no major problems except for scanner. My UMAX scanner is a "heap of junk" on Vista....no drivers from either Microsoft or UMAX. My thoughts on this particular subject (especially having wasted my time in contacting both companies and been given the old two-fingered salute from both) are unprintable!
Secondary boot is XP Pro SP3 for my older war-games (mostly SSI & Talonsoft) and the SCANNER!!!
My opinion: Vista is very pretty but does not have the "killer feature" that would make it a "must upgrade" over XP. | | | | Chris | | | | Last edited: by Mole |

That is if you discount the fact my fancy interface to my scanner disappeared, (this happened before, but I forgot what I did to get it back, and I occasionally have reload the PCP plugin, etc.
Why does Vista have almost a hundred updates, not counting all the other software updates to run on it.
I would be very a happy man if I could get as much use out of my PC as the virus, spyware, malware spam blocker and microsoft and other updates. | | | We don't need stinkin' IMDB's errors, we make our own.

But I would blame the scanner manufacturers rather than MS, for not providing proper drivers. The advice HP gives to solve the problem: "buy a new scanner". But new scanners are either combined with a printer (and of relatively low quality) or expenisive professional stuff. I would love to use my XP system for the scanner, but after SP3 wrecked the system, I can't get scanners and printers to work. | | | | Hans |

I remember when XP was still quite new and people were saying that that they wouldnt move from Windows 2000 and XP was just bloatware, those same people are now using XP and calling vista bloatware. They all move to the latest Microsoft OS eventually they just delay it a little longer & why not, there is no rush. For most people, they may as well wait until they're ready to buy a new PC.
Always wanted to give Mac OS a try though, never got round to it and I might find the lack of software a bit limiting. What does Mac OS have instead of Microsoft Office and does it let you work with MS Office documents? | | | | Last edited: by scottclr |

i don't use a Mac, but pretty sure you can get MS Office for Mac. Plus there are other programs, Open Office, that I beleive will read office documents.

Neo Office is for mac, its based on Open Office: http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.phpI use Open Office at work (eventhough i also have MS office) and i've only had problems with some MS word documents. It opens them and all that, but sometimes the layouts get a bit messed. I've had problems with the automated table of contents and once some picture didnt show properly. Never had any problems with excel files. |

Well, it seems unacceptable to buy every peripheral new every time you update your OS. So a new OS that doesn't support e.g. an "old" USB-Scanner is defective in my book. Quote:
