WOW!

Now this is fun, everyone with thier on opinion, interpreting my original post differently, i love it!

Point 1:

Personal preference on genres should be kept locally, agree, to many different opinions not too.

Everyone has their own opinion/interpretation, Just like genres, huh?

I don't understand the purpose of this thread  .

Genres are completely subjective and a personal choice. If you believe a genre is blatantly wrong in the online database then submit a profile change.

If you disagree with the genres in your local collection then change them to whatever you think they should be and lock them by right clicking on the title and choose Lock>Genres.

Not sure what your personal fight is with this post?, I'm just trying to have a little fun, does every tread have to have a purpose?, is it your job to interpret that purpose?, having an opinion about the contents of a tread is one thing, and is welcomed, but criticizing someones right to post no matter what it is, is something else. Are you having a bad day? Did someone kick your dog? why are you being such an ass?

Where was the "personal fight" with your post? I simply expressed my confusion as to the purpose of your original posting. And please show me where I criticized your right to post???

I think someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed and it certainly wasn't me .

I didn't understand its purpose either, madchef. You were having a little fun? The rules explain the genre question quite clearly and you decide to amuse yourself? I for one am not terribly amused, I don't care what you do locally, but once the Genre fields are filled unless something is blatantly wrong, i don't care what anyone's personal opinion, leave it ALONE. None of us wants to be dealing with updates on titles every week because some ummmm decides his Gnre is better than some other genre.

I don't find it a laughing matter. You weren't around when we got weekly updates on the SAME title because of genre, overview, even Cast and crew data and sort titles all because some user wanted the Online to reflect his OPINION.

After my first post you sent me a PM expressing your frustration. Now you say this was all a joke for your amusement? Well, I'm not the least bit amused. And I don't appreciate, as I'm sure other users who posted in this thread, your wasting our time for your personal amusement. Go amuse yourself somplace else please.

"I'm just trying to have a little fun, does every tread have to have a purpose?"

So, just trying to have a little fun doesn't mean joke. Ok. So I guess it just means fun at other's expense...fine.

If Genres became local-only, then wouldn't new profile downloads have blank genre fields?
I wouldn't want to fill in genres each time I downloaded a new profile.

Again, I'm sorry for the missunderstanding, will you accept my apology, Max?
What do i need to do?

I made one post in this thread expressing my confusion and you attack me calling me an ass:

I asked you where in my post I picked a fight or where I criticized your right to post. And still you refuse to answer.

My second post was my agreeing with you that many were interpreting your original post differently just as everyone interprets genres differently and yet you interpret my post as an attack. Amazing .You want me to accept your apology for what? For calling me an ass?

@Doombear....please don't take the following an an attack specifically aimed at you!!!

This kind of opinion annoys me and seems to be held my many users. It takes a couple of seconds to change your genres when you download a profile. I do it with practically all of mine as I rarely agree with other people's interpretation of genre.

Subsequently if this field was kept locally ONLY then it wouldn't take long to input your preference.

I recently went through my entire 4,000+ collection in a couple of hours changing genres...so how hard can it be.
I don't think genres add anything to the online db and just cause useless debates (like this one).

Or it could be like Sort Title. The original contributor sets it in the online DB and then it's over.

This is probably the best idea. The reason I like this is there is MANY (almost all) movies I buy that I have never even heard of before... let alone seen to be able to correctly put a genre to when I get it. And I would hate to have to research every title to put a genre on it even temporarily to have even an idea of what genre it belongs to.

I would say I agree with the online maybe (if I am lucky) half the time .

In a way, I agree that genres have no real use in the online database. When Adding a DVD to your collection by title for example, you can filter by genre, but why? I mean, if you already know the title of the film that you are searching for, how will filtering by genre be of any use? I always thought that the genre filter would be better served if it were in the Upcoming Releases Tab. That way I could search for just upcoming horror films or comedies or Sci-Fi. Genres play no role in the online collection page either. If you could filter or sort by genre on the online collection page that would be another story, but you can't. The only place that genres have any impact is in ones personal database and of course most of us change the genres locally anyways to suit our needs or preferences.
