Here is what it means to us.
The Germans called their "Civilian National Security Force" the "Brownshirts" or the "SA" before they changed the name to the "SS". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_shirts
The USSR call theirs the "KGB". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kgb
The Cubans call theirs the "Committees for the Defense of the Revolution." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Committees_for_the_Defense_of_the_Revolution Each block or neighborhood has one. They rat out their neighbors who express politically incorrect views. Dear Dan,
As can be seen by goodguy's post your comment "I think the video says it all" is just the usual misleading tripe that ultra right Republicans are becoming known for. Shame on you.
While it may be over-reacting to compare this statement to the "SS" or the "KGB", I think it is more than fair to ask exactly what he meant by this.
I listened to the entire video. He spoke separately about the "real" military, the Peace Corps, AmeriCorps and a "Civilian National Security Force". We already have a National Guard. So what exactly is this "Civilian National Security Force"? I'd certainly like to know more about what he means.
Listening to his speech reminded me of what an excellent speaker he is and how easy it is to be mesmerized into thinking that he really wants to help all Americans. Unfortunately, it just isn't true! What would you compare it to, Hal? He did say that it would be just as powerful, just as strong and just as well funded. To me, that would include air and ground forces along with all of the equipment and armament. | | | Dan |

The whole tone of that speech had to do with mobilizing the American people to engage in "public service". I got the impression that he was "stealing" some of the JFK platform, i.e. the Peace Corps, and got carried away with his oratory. I hope I'm not being naive! | | | Hal |

I hope I'm not being naive! I certainly hope not too!!! For all our sakes. Obviously, I do not want what he is asking for. God help us all if it is what it looks like.... walk like a duck, talk like a duck and all. | | | Dan | | | Last edited: by Dan W |

| Posted: | | | | Funny, seems like people want to make stuff up and then argue against their imagination. Where is the call for an "additional" security agency? Also, are you aware that we already have (among others) ... (see the web sites - they are all recruiting)
- Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) - National Security Agency / CSS - US Customs and Border Protection - US Marshals - CIA - FBI - Secret Service - TSA
All of these are Civilian National forces that have a responsibility for some aspect of US Security. In my other post, I quoted from the Obama transcript where it seemed to me that he was calling for examining these and doing some restructuring to strengthen them - just as we did after 9/11.
I don't get it. What is so sinister about that? | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. Advanced plugins available here. Hey, new product!!! BDPFrog. | | | Last edited: by mediadogg |

| Posted: | | | | Quoting mediadogg: Quote: I usually try to stay out of these, but this one really caught my attention, so I went to read the transcript. It is human nature to read into things what you expect - or want - or don't want, as the case may be.
Here is a quote that told me what I wanted to know:
"That also means, by the way, that we’re going to have to, I believe, reconfigure our civilian national security force. In a way that just hasn’t been done. I mean, we still have a national security apparatus on the civilian side in the way the State Department is structured and [Agency for International Development] and all these various agencies. That hearkens back to the Cold War. And we need that wing of our national security apparatus to carry its weight. When we talk about reinventing our military, we should reinvent that apparatus as well. "
I read this as meaning restructuring what we already have - not creating something new. Of course we already have many civilian agencies under Dept of Homeland Security, we have the FBI, CIA , etc. All of these agencies are National in scope and focused on security in some way or the other. All of these agencies have been re-focused, re-organized and re-missioned from time to time, most notably after Sept 11. (I was in NYC on that day - still have nightmares).
That's the way I read it, anyway. Not to split hairs but it is against the CIA's charter to spy internally. |

From the transscript Goodguy linked: Quote: a “civilian national security force” that could “deploy teams that combine agricultural specialists and engineers and linguists and cultural specialists who are prepared to go into some of the most dangerous areas alongside our military.” This sounds like something between military and development worker, for assigments outside the US, so this has absolutely nothing to do with KGB or SS. cya, Mithi | | | Mithi's little XSLT tinkering - the power of XML --- DVD-Profiler Mini-Wiki |

| Posted: | | | | I just watched HBO's Recount ( Kevin Spacey), and all I can say after reading these past posts in this thread.,, is you have the wrong 'party' in your sights... Wow what an eyeopener.. I hope there isn't a fiasco at the end of today that equals What Florida did 8 years ago .. You should all be ashamed of yourselves, to let that happen.. | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

| Posted: | | | | It's pretty obvious what he's talking about. The National Guard is off getting shot at in Iraq and Afghanistan, and they're the ones that used to respond to local emergencies. Since they've been claimed by the military, someone civilian needs to be in this country do these things.
You want to talk unconstitutional? What about wiretapping everyone's conversations like the Bush Administration has been doing. Or holding people in prison forever with no charges? The Republicans spit on the Constitution with regularity. | | | "This movie has warped my fragile little mind." |
