| Posted: | | | | Luckily I decideded to store my digitized collection in a flat folder structure. With Open Media Library I can browse the collection through Media Center (where I also watch TV, photos, play music, stream internet TV etc) using the standard filters on the movie metadata provided by DVD Profiler.
It's so much easier when you use a system matching reality instead of trying to make reality match the system. And in reality, a movie can fit in multiple genres. | | | Regards Lars |

We have a winner. Thread done. Only if you add to your comment...... make the change you want to the genre field, lock your profile, and don't contribute the change. | | | Dan | | | Last edited: by Dan W |

I think you and others in this thread have forgotten what this thread started by asking... it's not about profiles, it's about arranging backups in a folder. That being the case, it's entirely at the user's discretion, and has nothing to do with profiles. | | | Adelaide Movie Buffs (info on special screenings, contests, bargains, etc. relevant to Adelaideans... and contests/bargains for other Aussies too!) |

| Posted: | | | | I'd place it in Horror. Although it has Sci-Fi undertones, it's primarily designed to scare the crap out of you...which it does a very good job of doing . | | | My WebGenDVD online Collection |

That being the case, it's entirely at the user's discretion, and has nothing to do with profiles. When I owned 50 to 200 LP record albums, I sorted them by genre. But as the collection grew, I found myself asking why was I storing Eric Clapton with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in one bin and Cream in another. My genres were becoming too refined. And no one could find The Beach Boys or Procul Harum... who were in the same bin... choir boys and church organs. I kept Rococo separate from Baroque, and had a dog of a time dealing with Scott Joplin and Charles Ives and jazz and modern and such... So I switched to alphabetical with compilations under V for various artists and a separate listing for "classical"/concert music. Jazz & pop mixed together. But again... Scott Joplin... So now everthing is alphabetical, either by single artist name, compliation name, or composer's name. DVDs? All alphabetically, and I'm about to stop storing the box sets together... when my wife cannot find "The Adventures of Robin Hood" because it's in the box in the Ws (Warner Classics), then pure alphabetical it goes. Genres will fail you. I guarantee it. | | | If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

Genres will fail you. I guarantee it. That sounds like my collection ... only the exact opposite way. As it's grown larger, I've found myself breaking it up and spreading it out, at least DVD wise. Right now I have around 1700 CDs, all shelved alphabetically by author or composer, with soundtracks and compilations by the name of the disc - at least, those that will fit on my two shelves. Soon I'm going to have to take them all off the shelf and put them in tubs for the time being, because they're in the way of the panel that has to come off to get my new water heater installed. But when I put them back up I'm planning to break them into some very general genre groupings - and ruthlessly purge so that I can get everything on the shelves again. And I've had to do the same thing with the DVDs. They used to all be pure alphabetical by title, with only the anime separated out on its own shelf. But I ran out of room for shelves in my living room, so now there's a shelf of box sets in my bedroom and another with all my Star Trek DVDs, more box sets inside hollow ottomans, and a shelf of animation & documentaries in the hall as well as a wire rack with my Criterion Collection on it. | | | If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. -- Thorin Oakenshield | | | Last edited: by Danae Cassandra |

I thought we called them lawyers and politicians?
No, no lawyers are soulless, therefor they are zombies. As for politics poli is many and tics are blood sucking parasites. In the current economic meltdown I'd think of bankers and insurance men first... |

| Posted: | | | | Much like VibroCount, I've found it to be impossible to maintain a consistent genre classification across the board. Right now, I have a bit of a mixed bag with some clear-cut genres (e.g. music DVDs, documentaries) still separate and the rest in alphabetical order. With CDs it's alphabetical followed by compilations and then a separate classical music section which has the same structure (composers listed alphabetically and then the compilations). |

Is DVDPro on the same PC as your films? Yes it is. I'd hoped that I could use DVDPro to look for a film, then simply click, and it would play the file. Haven't found a way to do that. Would be nice though. | | | http://daterminehtor.blogspot.com/ |

| Posted: | | | | Look in the Layouts forum - I'm sure there's an HTML window that could do this. Also the Plugins forum - there's a plugin called LoadDVD which can be configured to play movies from the hard drive. |

Would be nice though. As Northbloke says this is indeed possible. Below is a modified version of the code I use that provides a link to a trailer on the PC. You don't mention what format your media is in so I made it for vob files, its easy enough to change it to whatever you need. First create a tag called 'on pc' (without quotes) then make a new html window and paste the code below into it: Quote:
<HTML> <HEAD>
<SCRIPT TYPE="text/javascript"> <!-- <DP NAME="HEADER_VARS" Language="JavaScript" Comments="True" IncludeCast="False" IncludeCrew="false"> //--> </SCRIPT>
<SCRIPT language=javascript> window.onload = window_onload; function window_onload() { var i; myloop: for (i = 0; i < DP_Tags.length; i++) { switch (DP_Tags[i]) { case "on pc": idPlay.href = ""F:\\Trailers\\" + DP_CollectionNumber + ".vob"; break myloop; } } if (i >= DP_Tags.length) { // Remove link if there is no trailer tag idPlay.removeNode(true); } } </SCRIPT>
</HEAD> <BODY>
<A id=idPlay href="#">Play Trailer</A>
</BODY> </HTML>
Tag any profiles that you have on your HDD and a link will appear in the html window. Don't forget to change the bit in red to whatever path your media is at (making note of the double slashes). Also, I rename my trailers with the collection number they have if profiler so if you want to name them the title they have in profiler you should replace the bit in green with DP_Title. If you're media is in different formats give me a shout and I'll post up something else. Be sure to check out the LoadDVD plugin still as it may be more to your liking. |
