Is this the thread for this discussion?  If so, let's hear the opinions.

Since this was started as a poll, I'd suggest starting another thread to discuss moderating functions.

I did not see my name on the list.  I would enjoy being a Mod.

The poll is more 'the peoples vote' and a bit tongue in cheek. Of course Ken will decide himself how best to appoint moderators or admin.
Personally I see the moderators job should be 'policing' threads to keep them on track, remove personal attacks, and make the forums a more productive and newbie friendly environment. Certainly they should not have the power of persuasion on a topic through personal bias.

PS - sorry Leo, I only took the most active forum users for the poll, of course the best moderators may be the least active here.

I have current experience as a moderator and as a moderator of moderators but not always the time to do it.  I think that it's okay to have a known moderator but they'll have to be able to put aside personal bias for neutrality.  There should be more than one moderator (since we all have lives and like to spend hours watching DVDs) and someone would need to moderate the moderators.

A moderator forum to discuss possible actions needed would be wise as well and this would be where moderators debate things.  A moderator should NEVER argue with another moderator or revoke/undermine a decision of another moderator in the public forums.

I see I'm listed in the poll so I'm not voting.  But to the person who did vote for me,

One potential benefit to the forums is the ability to screen users.  If a user has been known to cause issues, they can be set so their posts must be approved by a moderator prior to being posted to the general populace.

This could create "continuity" problems within the thread and I generally would not support it.

I see various names that I'd like, but I also see some names that, if they were appointed, would spend most of their moderating time deleting their own posts!

I don't see how it would cause continuity problems.  User (screened) makes a post.  His post won't be visible to others until a moderator approves it.  There's no continuity being broken because as far as everyone else is concerned, it doesn't exist.  There is no difference between a user posting three hours after the last comment than a screened user posting one minute after but not being approved until three hours later.

Post A would be made, Post B (but screened), then Post C.  Later, Post B would be approved by a moderator and the order displayed on the forum would be A, C, B.

Another way to think of it is that any posts made by a screened use wouldn't exist in the forum being posted on until approved.  Then it would be posted/moved there with the time stamp of the approval so there is no indication that the user is being screened.

If you moderate any Yahoo Group, this is how their "moderated" flag works for group members.

Except it could be Post A, post C, Post D, Post E, Post F, Post G, Post H, with Post E and H being posted by the same poster as A.  Then all of a sudden Post B shows up after Post H responding to Post A, without actually quoting Post A.  Relating post B to Post A could become a challenge.

In principle, I just would not support this much power being given to the Moderators.  This would be more control than I would be in support of.

I also don't believe a Moderator should have the ability to edit or delete a post.  This should be reserved to Ken only.

Moderators should only intervene by either PM'ng users with a warning or in rare cases posting to a thread in order to get it back on track.

Wow! I appreciate all the votes for me.

Wow for mine too.  Well, if I were asked, I would be happy to give it a go. I love DVD Profiler and would enjoy the opportunity. If I'm not asked, I still look forward to what moderation could do for us.

I voted for you, but I have to admit you were my second choice as Mark was not on the list.    I have always found you to be pretty fair minded, but Mark is on a whole different level.

How is that different from how it functions today?  People can come in late and reply to this-n-that, happens all the time.

The way I read this, there wouldn't be any point to moderators.  A moderator without any teeth isn't a moderator.  They would be no different than a "Report This" button for Ken to review but they would simply have more restraint than the general user when hitting it.

I will not say who I voted for. I will repeat what i told Ken well over a year ago and posted here as well. There are maybe two or three users that i think are mature enough to take on the responsibilities that are involved in being a moderator and two of them are in the above list. Most of the users would use the opportunity to stifle debate, as far as i am concerned, personally, if you can't handle the beliefs of someone who is passionate in his beliefs, then perhaps you should not participate in debate. I am a very passionate person and my beliefs are my beliefs and i will defend them with passion, this does not excuse the behavior of those who believe in speech control, or those who most of the time simply must attack and insult.

We have a small handful of users, who are being permitted to run off major contributing members hand over fist i count at least FIVE in the last week, through their disruptive behavior and the double standard that is applied by others in the community, as long as this is allowed to continue and these ill-behaved cretins are allowed to rule the forums and the Contributions with an iron fist then there are many who will continue to depart and take their data with them. For me, Ken, if you are reading this, enough is enough, the reputation system is a DISASTER and allowing most of these users anywhere near moderation would be a further disaster. I don't even want to guess at the number of profiles which are in my database which I, at one time would have freely given to further Invelos database and the community, but it is easily in the hundreds, I am watching friends depart being driven off by the behavior and in some cases the inability to present logical thoughts to a discussion. I will remain, but i will NOT Contribute my data any longer, nor will I allow much of the data that is Contributed to get anywhere near my own database.
