From Boxofficemojo:
Seeking out new life for the series, Star Trek commanded a stellar estimated $72.5 million on approximately 7,400 screens at 3,849 sites over the weekend (plus an estimated $4 million from Thursday night previews).

More info here.

I'm sure the producers would love for this kind of "bashing" to continue for a while!

I went into this with low expectations, despite hearing about all the positive reviews, and I was blown away.  Great film!  I have to admit that I was never really big on the original series, although I did like the original films and the subsequent series.  Even my better half, who never has really watch any Star Trek, loved this film.

Count me in as a happy viewer!

I went in with mixed feelings. I've done a good job of avoiding any spoilers and I was glad I did.  I won't spoil it for anybody else, but I will say that this is a BIG departure from all prior Star Trek movies.  I'm glad they didn't try to out-Star-Trek the old Star Trek.  A whole new take on the series that could easily produce several entertaining sequels.

Clearly a parody.
I really enjoyed the part where the Captain Kirk double fought something that amazingly looked like a cheap copy of Godzilla.

Here it is in full length

Watched the movie yesterday, thought it's 7/10ish, but felt a bit shallow. Didn't really care about anything that happend Spoiler:  (Select to view)
especially when Vulcan was destroyed, what a waste
.

Also I felt that they should have approached the action scenes a little slower and with less shaky-cam.

I think the Enterprise coming out of Saturns rings was the only astheticly appealing shot I think.

I hear that!  Although Voyager isn't my favourite series, it is the first Star Trek series I got into heavily.  I think it'd make a brilliant movie.  Although a bit difficult as it was all wrapped up in the end.

Spoilers for the new movie so putting this in tags -

Spoiler:  (Select to view)
As much as I'd like to see further TNG/DS9/Voyager era films, as the new movie has damaged the timeline with the destruction of Vulcan, events as we know them may have happened very differently if at all. So at this time, I'm not sure how a Voyager film could be made.

The timeline hasn't been damaged - an alternate timeline was created.  In essence, we now have two Star Trek universes.

As for Voyager - the whole main plot line was getting the ship back to Earth.  They did that.  What else is there to cover?

What do you base that on? From everything that was shown in the film, it's all set in the "primary" universe. Therefore the way I see it, it's like "First Contact" where they see Earth transform into a Borg Planet. The only way to go back to how things were would be to stop the Romulans from destroying Vulcan/Killing Kirk's father/etc... .

They said in the movie that an alternate timeline was created.  I understand your argument though. *shrug*
ETA: Spoiler:  (Select to view)
Alternately, it could be a situation like in the TV show "Sliders" in which it's an alternate dimension which is nothing new to the Star Trek universe - though any cross-overs have been isolated to one so far.

I can't recall the name of the ST:TNG episode but I think it was "Forever Enterprise" in which a previous version of the Enterprise jumped into the future which drastically changed the timeline and the Federation was now at war with the Klingon Empire and loosing.  The timeline was effectively restored by sending the ship back into the past to suffer its original fate of being destroyed.

So, if the Romulan mining ship was prevented from jumping back in time, the alternate timeline that was created and viewed in this latest movie would never have been created in the first place.

It would, however, put an end to this new vision of the Star Trek universe and any sequels.  But I think the original ST universe has seen it's full run of TV shows and movies and the only way to revitalize it was to reinvent it.  Kinda like the most recent Battlestar Galactica series.

"Yesterday's Enterpise" is the episode. To use IMDb's plot description "The Enterprise C enters the Enterprise D's time and space continuum, where they find Picard and crew in a constant state of war with the Klingons, and only Guinan knows it."

Exactly. That's why time travel movies are never a good idea. When the idea for another Kirk film with new actors was first suggested, I thought it would just be an early mission with them, possibly with them meeting. Not one where they send someone back & change how/why people join the Federation. Due to different motivations, they may not achieve their original potential, as shown by Kirk throughout the movie, although he did get Captain at the end.
