Like i said  I prefer the '06 DVD. But I will say this based on Beaver's review of the BD-version, it looks like it has some genuine promise.

One thing that I note with the Searchers is that on the three image sets we have three radically different versions of film in nearly every aspect of picture quality. The only reason I mention it, and I don't mean to digress or get into a controversial topic, it reminds me of the our own issues sometimes with images. I find the '06 DVD to be the best balanced color-wise of the three images. Howare we to know, typically witjh MOST restorations we can't unless th original filmmakers were involved, or left detailed production notes, neither of these are very likely most of the time. It also reminds me a bit of the Disney Animation Dept and how relatively easy their restorations are with respect to color. One of the things that Walt instituted right from the very beginnings of his color animation was detailed information as to precisely what colors were used and how they were compiled. This gives a fine baseline to work from, THIS is the yellow in Snow Whites dress in this scene, makes life a good bit easier. These colors are used by contemporary animators should they find they have to do something with a Disney character such as Bambi II.

Sorry to digress and ruminate.

Interesting digression.  It also makes some of Disney's latest...ummm, reinterpretations for lack of a better word, of their classic cartoons even more difficult to understand.  The golden Peter Pan produced in this last go-around is particularly odd.

I agree, Walt has turned in his grave more than a few times over some of thiese "sequels"

Actually, I wasn't referring to sequels, but rather the reissues of the classic material.  The latest Peter Pan, in particular, has some of the oddest color timing of them all.  Yellows cranked up beyond belief, imbueing everything with a golden hue.  The indian's skin color was no longer red, a probable bow to political correctness.  There was quite the discussion amongst animation folks when it came out.  Every previous presentation ever released, either for the home or theatrical sported completely different color timing than this last release.

I've gotten to the point where I very closely read the reviews on Disney reissues these last couple of years.  Some of them have been great, but others have had some real questionable changes done to them.

Does anyone own, or have seen, the various releases of The Searchers

I want to pick up a copy of the film for my collection - but I am torn as to which one to get.  As I understand it, the original DVD release from 1997 has good color while the 2006 release is washed out color wise, but the 1997 has worse cropping than the 2006.

I don't have a blu or HD player, so picking up the film in either of those formats would not work.

At any rate, I was wondering if anyone has seen both DVD versions and would recommend one over the other.

I would get the 2006 edition. It is a restored version and the more accurate of the two. I would suggest this version as it is cheaper than the Ultimate Collectors Edition but contains the same extras on disc.

Thank you, Telecine!

Widescreen, are you happy, or at least satisfied, with the color on the HD you own (as opposed to the 1997)?  As I understand it will be the same color as the 2006 DVD release.

My first experience with this film was the 1991 laser disc,, and I was blown away by the colors and vistas,, but as the laser disc phase came and went (along with my discs) I picked up the 1997 dvd and I was very disappointed in the colors .., till word came ( as the threads show) of a newer edition.,
So I Went with the HDDVD and was happily again enthralled with the vista's  and a different shade of hues that  made me very happy., let alone the 1080 resolution as well.,.
The earlier cropped dvd and LD was only (as vista vision is) 1:66, but the 2006 edition is a full 1:77 so the image is not 'as' cropped. Sound is only MONO 1.0 but strong and vibrant.

Thanks for all the opinions, everybody!  I decided to go with The Ultimate Collectors Edition, since the cost difference through Columbia House was negligible between that one and the one Telecine recommended (like $2), and the UCE comes with more swag.

I may have to pick up the single disc snapper at some point, just to compare for myself, but right now I'm just pretty happy to have the film in my collection.

I have to say it: get a Blu-ray player and get the Blu-ray edition of The Searchers!

As I understand it, to really take advantage of a blu-ray player, I would need a high-def TV.  My CRT just doesn't cut it.  However, for my way of thinking the TV is still very new (I bought it about 6 years ago) and it is definitely the largest, nicest TV I have ever owned.  To replace it with a HD of comparable size looks to run about 1-2k, and I would have to replace the cabinet, since the new TV would be wider.

Also, I only have room for one player in the cabinet and I have yet to see a blu-ray/VHS combo player.    (Yes, I still have about 20 VHS of things that haven't been released on DVD.)

Now, if I'm wrong about needing an HD TV, please let me know.

No, you're quite right. You'd need to upgrade before being able to really benefit from Blu-ray. Before you're ready to do that, I'd say: stick to DVD.
