I have a 16 year old Panasonic TV, model TC59R62 4*3 62 cm that is going great guns, no sign of strobing, flaring or any other indicators of it dying, and a fairly new DVD player, Pioneer DV 310. Bill DVDs look great up-converted on a bd player, almost as good as real HD. I have no intention of replacing at least 75% of my collection. Cool to hear about a late teenage TV still kicking though, they really don't make em like they used too! Until you replace that, bd will do you no good anyway. I thought my 9 year old Sony that got moved to bedroom was pretty amazing to still be fine after so long. Some friends have gone through 3-4 TV's in that time.  |

So i made a system how to get new tech without throwing the old ones away. At the moment my mother has my old amp, cd-player, dvd-player and TV. Having just "gone Blu-ray" we've been pleasantly surprised with playback/upscaling of our DVDs. Our old DVD player was the top-of-the-range Pioneer of about 4-5 years vintage....cost £800...we found that the best PQ is upscaling to 720p; the new Blu-ray is an LG BD-390...cost £250...best PQ is now upscaling to 1080i (which is the max that our TV will do, and b***** me it's better, and a third of the cost...technology marches on.....  We watched our DVD of "Hogfather" tonight (well, it is Christmas  ); the upscaled picture really is more brilliant and detailed than the Pioneer. Technology marches on...the LG is "better" than the Pioneer. We were expecting a better PQ with BD (which we certainly get), but the enhanced PQ from the old DVDs is a real bonus!. So, like bigdaddyhorse we'll be in no hurry to replace our DVDs with BD. I think that our buying policy will be BD for the big blockbusters, and cheaper DVD for the "well, maybe" lot. Please take a look and read of the link thread below and let me know which the uk bd more resembles. http://forums.highdefdigest.com/blu-ray-software-general-discussion/18838-bram-stokers-dracula-high-def-digest-review-5.html I've been holding on tight to my superbit dvd ever since seeing these screens from the newer US dvd, and everything I've read leads me to believe that is what the US BD looks like (which is why I won't bother to even get it from the library, much less buy it even though it's my GF's favorite movie and I like it enough to have a custom dvd of the laserdisc an the SB DVD). I did pick up the newer US dvd for the features when it was on sale for $5 or so, but will never watch it. If a good BD exists, that woul be very cool. |

Will integrate into system over the weekend.
Didn't have a choice of first Blu Rays. Also received as a gift (collusion between family members)

Should be enjoyable watching them this weekend.
By the way W0m6at - The rest is a Sherwood 7.1 amp, Olevia 42" 242t lcd and home build speakers (7.1). (Speakers are great, need to upgrade amp. It does a decent job, but doesn't reproduce the upper end as well as I would like.) |
