Since it obviously holds a special place in your heart I just thought I'd make sure you knew that (in anticipation of the remake) the BluRay of this is being released on 15th March...

Nice!  I'll be putting in an order for this ASAP.

And now that they're talking about a remake of Escape From New York again, maybe we can look forward to a Blu-Ray release of it here is the states somewhere down the line?

The Evil Dead: Full Uncut Version

All Regions

Released: 03/09/2001

Anamorphic 1.85:1

The Evil Dead (1982)
I first saw this film just before it was banned and it scared the hell out of me. Years later when it finally got released uncut I bought it and have to admit to being disappointed. Watching it again today I can see why I haven't re-watched it since buying it. Everything about this film screams cheap. The effects are laughable and the acting atrocious. I couldn't even summon up a feeling of nostalgia; thinking back to my youth of sneakily watching 'video nasties'. Total disappointment.

Highlight: Linda's 'We're gonna get you' routine and giggling...it's the only creepy thing in the film.

Worst bit: Plasticine slow-motion at the end!

Verdict: 1/5. Sadly a film which once held a special place in my memory is likely to end up in my 'to be sold' pile!

The House on Sorority Row

All Regions

Released: 02/04/2007

Full Frame 1.33:1

The House on Sorority Row (1982)
With this one I'm deviating away from my guidelines for this marathon. I've never actually seen this film before today; but because it was made in the right year and only cost me 99p I thought I'd slot it in.
I bought the film because I really want to see the remake: "Sorority Row" and thought it would be a good idea to see the original first. Also, because I have a weakness for 80's horror films (Evil Dead excepted, obviously).
I was actually quite impressed with the story; which while standard slasher-film fare, did throw out a few twists and creepy moments. I'm also not a lover of clowns, so the ending creeped me out.
Not enough blood for my liking; but certainly a film that will get rewatched when I'm in the mood for horror.

Highlight: The end sequence with Kathryn running through the house.

Verdict: 2.5/5. A worthy addition to my horror collection and well worth the price-tag. Looking forward to the remake!

Tootsie

Regions: 2, 4

Released: 10/12/2001

Anamorphic 2.35:1

Tootsie (1982)
I always seem to forget how much I love Tootsie until I rewatch it. I'm not a huge fan of Dustin Hoffman - mainly because he always seems to play Dustin Hoffman - but, in this film I completely forget it's him once he's in Dorothy-mode. It's a very confident and funny performance which always makes me smile. Also, Jessica Lange is excellent: an adorable performance (not sure it deserved the Oscar tho').
On a personal note I was still invisible to everyone around me in my private life. No real sense of self emerging and still being dressed by my mother! My taste in music and film was developing nicely though which was starting to untie those apron strings!

Highlight: There's 2 actually: the Dorothy/Julie almost-kiss and the final 'unveiling'.

Verdict: 4/5. A great, heartwarming, funny film that really has stood up to the test of time. If anything I think it's funnier than a lot of so-called rom-coms being made today.

The Rescue

Regions: 2, 4

Released: 12/11/2004

Widescreen 2.35:1

The Rescue (1988)
I'm obviously reviewing this film out of sequence...and that's because I've only just received it. I had this film on VHS back in the day - and it was one of the few tapes I kept when I got rid of my collection; because I knew it wasn't available anywhere on DVD.
So imagine my surprise and joy when I discovered it had been released in Australia. I promptly ordered it and I'm very glad I did.

The story centres on a group of army brats whose father's are captured by Northern Korea while on a mission and subsequently abandoned by the US government. But their kids don't accept the decision and decide to rescue them. From then the story is an action adventure romp with the children having to steal transport, wear disguises, fight bad guys and race against the clock to save their parents before they're executed.
It's been over 20 years since I'd seen this film and I'm very pleased to say it was as good as I remembered. It's a fun film with some good set pieces and comedic moments, and IMO shows Touchstone doing what they did best in the 80s.

Highlight: One word: Fireworks!!

Verdict: 4/5. A great 80s adventure film with some solid performances from the kids and some great action sequences. A solid, family film that I'm very pleased to have finally obtained on DVD.

I agree , and it seems funny that cross dressing movies are recorded  in the top five comedys  of all time...
In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.
