"slated" is about the same as "scheduled" in this context.

I'm not sure what you could have meant, pauls42.

I can confirm that 'slated', in the UK at least, means something is regarded as terrible.

The newspapers here regularly use this word to describe films that have been 'slated' or given terrible reviews.

Im from Scotland so have no idea about the UK

Perhaps you need to look at a map then where you will see that scotland is part of the UK.

And since you are from the UK, I'd thought you were refering to the UK usage rather than the American usage. I stand corrected that there are two difefrent interpreations of the word.

But somehow I don't think any film company will put the 'slated' on any of their own film posters which are going up in the UK..

Yes we still are

I don't see why this is such an issue as it would seem clearly i used the same title as was on the article as the title for the thread.

what I meant was slated - which in the context of film reviews means given a poor rating.

I had no idea of this funny American use of the word..

So am I the only American that understood both definitions?  While the British version certainly isn't common over here, I've heard it before.

Just this past week one of our local HD networks ran Ben Hur in High Def.. I knew it would be too good to be true to see this -ten months before release date ,, But set the PVR  and the 212 min film with its Glorious colors was letterboxed (2.76:1 )during the opening 7 minute Overture , but then went to 1.78 for the rest of the movie INCLUDING the chariot race..    Even the 1980's VHS set had the forsight to please us with the chariot race in widescreen and the rest of the movie in pan and scan 1.33 for that videotape release..
even the intermission and exit music  was in widescreen but not the film itself ...
I can't blame the network ( Movie Central) as they confirmed with me that the print they received was what the studios released to them .  I guess Warner's wanted to just whet our whistle with this one.. and Even the audio , normally 5.1 was only Dolby surround  or stereo ...
But the print was outstanding even though we lost a third of the picture due to 16x9  framing .

how about the USA or European televised events of this in High Def.. what release  did you receive???

I'm taking bets on how many pages this thread will go for in its debate on the various uses of the word "slated".

I'm saying 6

I find it pretty funny that 90% of this thread has been about the use of the word "slated".

Years ago, when something subject to change such as a schedule, it was written with chalk on a black board.
A black board, a slate, thus slated. Schedules are subject to change.
