Great films (or at least, favorite films) not on any "greatest" list

Exotica

Oh, absolutely!  EXOTICA is a masterpiece.

Some other movies that I love to watch:

LOCAL HERO
McCABE & MRS. MILLER
RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY
THE SWEET HEREAFTER (another terrific Atom Egoyan movie, like EXOTICA)
CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF
PICKUP ON SOUTH STREET
VAGABOND
PINK FLOYD THE WALL
HEAVENLY CREATURES

Ratcatcher

Lynne Ramsay, the writer and director of Ratcatcher, was originally scheduled to direct "The Lovely Bones" but then this chore was turned over to Peter Jackson.  I equated this to having the writing of a novel being reassigned to Harold Robbins in place of Somerset Maugham.

Earlier this week I began watching "The Lovely Bones" and after 5 minutes or so had to put this off until some later date.  I felt that my already low expectations would allow me to at least deal with it or perhaps even enjoy it, but alas no.  When I watch a film I want it to be a satisfying experience and given time I hope I'll be able to find it so.

Hmm. Okay, in an attempt at keeping this in the spirit that I think VibroCount intended, my picks consists of relatively unknown films that I think are great, but that I also think have a lot of artistic merit. Those do not always go hand-in-hand for me.

Primer - A shoestring budget time-travel movie with amazingly complicated but realistic logic, that requires at least two viewings to get your head around. Chances are you'll also want to check out one of the many explanations available online.

The Vanishing (Dutch original, not U.S. remake) - An amazing suspense thriller that really ought to have won the Best Foreign Oscar back in 1988, but was disqualified by the Academy because it had too much French in it to be considered Dutch. It's kinda fun to watch the U.S. remake afterwards to compare the two, but the original really ought to be seen with a fresh eye.

13 Tzameti - Another low-budget indie movie made by some really talented people. I saw this one blind, with no inkling of what the story might be, and I heartily recommend others do the same.

In Bruges - A brilliantly written (Oscar nominated for original screenplay) and amazingly funny comedy. In my eyes, Colin Farrell's best movie.

definitely agree on the original, Dutch production of "The Vanishing" - one of the most disturbing thrillers I've ever seen !  "In Bruges" was also much much better than it had any right to be.

haven't seen any animation / anime on anyone's list (besides my own post for Porco Rosso, sorry if I missed one), so I'll add these to my personal list"

Grave of the Fireflies - one the best, and heart-wrenchingly beautiful / sad films ever made

Spirited Away

I thought of a few more:

"In America" and "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada" - Perhaps I'm partial to those of questionable immigration status.  I'm originally from San Francisco but now live in Salinas, California and can't drive more than 5 minutes in any direction without seeing people working in the fields.  Whenever I go to San Francisco and look at all the tall buildings I can't help but ask the question: "What have you done for me lately?" (Or should that be "...to me lately?)

"Quest for Fire" - I'd very much like to see a Director's cut of this.  Near the end the quest is successfully completed by the use of atlatls.  It's never shown how this skill was acquired.  I have the nagging feeling that the movie was to have been half again as long.

Not sure how much hype this does or doesn't get, but True Romance has always been a favorite.

There are some very nice films here. Good is good, and most of these are very good.

Keep it up with other cool favorites (please).
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.
