Why Can't America Make Real Cheese

Plus, true 'Cheddar' cheese the above phoney imitations are not.

From Wiki:

"The name 'Cheddar cheese' has become widely used internationally, and does not currently have a protected designation of origin (PDO). However, the European Union recognises West Country Farmhouse Cheddar as a PDO.[3]  To meet this standard the cheese must be made in the traditional manner, using local ingredients, in one of four designated West Country counties: Somerset, Devon, Dorset, or Cornwall. However only one producer of the cheese is now based in Cheddar itself, The Cheddar Gorge Cheese Co."



I'm partial to a nice smoked Austrian or Bavarian cheese myself.

It really depends.

The grocers that I go to, yes.  And if there is one that they don't have. I can go to the deli and get or order almost any one.

If you go to the budget grocer,then probably not.  But most actually do carry a variey of cheddar, Swiss, and longhorns.

This is also true of Champagne.  True Champagne only come from Champagne, France.  Otherwise it is only a sparkling Wine.

And granted that I live in Wisconsin, but I have at least 2 cheese only stores in the town I live in.  One makes its own cheese.  And while they do carry "orange" cheeses, most aren't any where close to that color and are award winning.  Not to mention, even our Wal-Mart grocery stores carry more varieties of cheese than you're trying to claim.

Actually, most major subermarkes will have a deli section with a wide variety of meats and cheeses.  Clearly you did not go to a major supermarket...not that it matters as you didn't ask why you couldn't find real cheese in America, you asked why America can't make real cheese.  As Charlie has indicated, American can, and does, make real cheese.

You really shouldn't make assumptions based on your inability to find something.  Here is a nice list of all the styles of American cheese.

Looking at all those pictures makes me really hungry!  Madame Mole & I love cheese  and so will undertake (on behalf of Filmalba) a study of cheese from the SW of the USA during our holiday there in July/August.........

So, suggestions please for cheeses from AZ & NM!  (any with chilli?)

Saw this item today and than thought of this ridiculous post ..  a very small block of good brand of cheese (chedder) the size of cigarette package runs between 5 to 8 dollars .. in Canada .. that is why the cross border shopping has us bringing home cheese (but we are only allowed $20 within a 24 hr day..) and the Americans love to call us Cheese heads..

Not sure what kind of supermarket you went to FilmAlba but I live in upstate NY and we get plenty of great cheeses from the region, especially Vermont, and also from Europe in our local supermarkets. Maybe you should just stay in Scotland and leave people from the rest of the world alone.

I think it is quite true that generally in North America (I include Canada) the cheese selection isn't close to the huge variety available virtually everywhere in Europe.  Also, at least here in Canada, the prices of cheese is through the roof, absolutely ridiculously high.

Virtually any chain grocery store in the U.K. and for that matter, anywhere in Europe (the more prosperous countries) has a far greater selection of all foods than here in North America.

Food wise, Europe has us beat.

ROFL You win that one. I blame Hersey for saleing us cheap imatation chocolate. It still taste good tho but cost less.

Depends on what you are looking for.

Granted, some of the best food I've ever had was in Russia and France, but the best steaks I've eaten have all been in the US (although a little restaurant in Paris came damn close. :lol: ).
