Being the target of sarcasm is not funny and the "received" will feel ridiculed. It may therefore indeed become the source of a stronger argument, if you don't know the person very well you are using it with. Also, I think sarcasm may be easier brought across verbally, the written form can easily be misunderstood.

But the environment that the Community has forced Ken into has made all of that bad, hell, I don't know if saw it but last week, I cracked a joke and some user took offense at the joke with something like "Can we please stop, we all know where this is going." Good grief , man it was JOKE, and I even responded with words to the effect that we can't even laugh in here anymore.  No, I am not rolling eyes at you. Gunnar and I have crossed swords more time than i can count, and sometimes our words can be pretty sharp, I can't speak for Gunnar, I can only speak for me. But gunnar is still a friend and I hold him no ill-will of any kind, he can be frustrating and annoying,....yeah...and...so what. | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!!

Still, seeing the definition that Charlie posted I'm starting to think that the example that I posted maybe was more irony than sarcasm? Or something else?
I guess the implied question was something like
You are always telling us that you know exactly what the rules mean and how easy it is to follow them. So how come you are now contradicting yourself?
So - if we keep this discussion strictly to language used and not to the points being argued in the example - how wrong was it to change that into "Did the rules change in the meantime" ? That was of course a rhetorical question. We all know that the rules did not change. Was turning it into a rhetorical question more impolite than asking it outright?
I'm more used to debating face to face (and in my native language), so it's sometimes difficult to know where the line is. I'm trying to learn... | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users.

Irony however is allowable, but only if each ironic remark is specifically marked with a smiling emoticon.

First I was tempted to laugh out loud because of the (intended(?)) absurdity. And then realized that, except for the official forum, we are already on the way to your proposal.
