I also thought about Matthew 7:4, but since surfeur already wrote it:

"Why let one bad apple
spoil the whole damn bunch"
(Guns N'Roses  - Bad Apples)

I just tend to ignore invalid "No"-Votes, because in the end the screeners decide.

It's people like this that make me very glad I decided to stay away from this place...and as a result I'm not even going to bother voting anymore: it's just not worth the effort when stupid, insulting, people respond in this manner.

You decided to stay away yet you had to bring this to the forum? Sorry but I don't see the point of threads like these, unless you want to add to the problem. Especially since we have been told not to bring PM conversations to the forum.

You have a valid point in many respects.

I was not trying to add to the problem as you put it - what I was doing was pointing out that no matter how much time elapses people in this community don't change.

However, in retrospect, I should have calmed down before posting in this forum. It achieves nothing to bring it here; and, in all honesty, I don't feel any better for having done so.

In some ways I miss taking a more active role in the Profiler community. I used to enjoy contributing; and I now find that I edit a lot less of my older profiles now that I'm not trying to 'fix' the online database....it's just not as much fun doing it just for myself.

Whereas, in the past, I couldn't go a day without opening Profiler, I now find that a whole week can go by without doing so.

On the flip side I've read a hell of a lot more books, I've watched a lot more DVDs and I've even started writing fiction again.
I never actually realised how life-consuming Profiler had become for me. Now I do.

I don't think I will ever start to contribute again...and I guess, in my defence, posting the PM I had received was my way of adding justification to that decision.

Thankfully I never gave a name to the person who sent me the PM (and have no intention of doing so)...but, regardless of whether I should or shouldn't have made this a public issue, it doesn't change the fact that this person had no right to send an insulting message to me.

I stand by my decision to distance myself from this community; but that doesn't stop me still being affected by things.

So, once again, I can see I was wrong to bring this to the forum....but totally correct to be offended. Also, if the people who act in this manner are not reprimanded in some way it will never stop. Maybe Ken should give us the ability to 'red arrow' PM's...if that had been an option I wouldn't have bothered coming into the forum at all.

Human nature dictates that it never will - and this is the same for all communities, virtual or otherwise.

We can build buffers around ourselves such as moderating all posts or avoiding web sites or locations, but in the end, nothing changes in this regard.  There will always be nice people and there will always be jerks.

(The definition of "nice people" and "jerks" is also subjective.)

Regarding PMs, I actually have a slighlty different point of view. Their purpose is in fact to make private comments - to avoid the public spotlight for whatever reason. I think it is a violation of proper protocol to publish private comments. We have the ability to block, and we have the ability to try and persuade the other party. What is the point of making something public and causing a stir? When I have gotten an unwanted PM, I simply asked the other party to stop - and they did. Simple, civil, private. (Edit: I see now that somebody else has basically said the same thing already - sorry I missed that post - I might not have made this one if I had noticed.)

I hope this post isn't considered by anybody to be overly critical. That is not my purpose. I am just sharing a perspective that might be interesting to some, maybe not to others. It does sadden me to see just how much angst is created during the contributions process. Those of us who do not have those skills depend so heavily on the passion and dedication of those of you that take the time to make those contributions. I just wish you could have more fun doing it ...
