I still get a ton on R1 submissions to vote on every day. I own a lot of foreign releases, but I do see far less contributions to those. | | | Corey |

I do too, but it's mostly like bbbbb says. New birth years, wrong birth years removed, a few common names here and there. That's pretty much 90% of all contributions I vote on. And my collection consists of 37.3% DE, 36.9% UK, 22.1% US and 3.1% CA profiles | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

White House Down R.I.P.D. Despicable Me & Despicable Me 2 boxed set Supernatural: Eighth Season boxed set (no primary entry, not just missing child entries) Bullet to the Head (until I uploaded it earlier) Side by Side (but obscure, so no surprise) Game of Thrones: Complete Second Season (been out ages) - no images RoboCop Trilogy boxed set
As I said, I know I can add them, and for some I will, but it's different from say 2 years ago where I was always amazed anything I bought was present. Maybe Region 2 viewers are using something else now? Also, looking at your collection, I can see you are a U.K. buyer. I myself am buying in the Netherlands (my country), Germany (a few km's over the border) and the U.K. (amazon). For profiling I often look at the USA. Sometimes from France. In the USA and Germany, contributions are always in a high tempo. Enough fanatic users; you only need a few per country. The U.K. contributions have dropped sharply since about two years or so. The few fanatic users that contributed much were chased away by the then often very rude interactions in the fora. They are still active at the refugee internet site for profiler users. The Netherlands are somewhere inbetween whilst France has improved -- it used to be poor but is now better. So for the U.K.'s poor current state of profiles, blame the forum trolls. Unfortunately it will only get better if new 'fanatic users' will rise. The refugees have had their fill, do not expect them to return anytime soon. That said, I concur with the remarks on program development and its consequences for user motivation. As much as Invelos has focused on the emerging big markets for ipad and android, the announced (!) improved internet profile site is now 4 years or so in the making and the current PC version is also ageing (see here in the beta forum most recent discussion). And since the heated interactions in the fora have died down (a good thing) I haven't seen any presence from Invelos recently (a not so good thing). Last, in part the movie industry is to blame too. I've seen the pace of new films coming to disk slowing down (be that on DVD or BluRay) as is the pace of publishing old movies. Result: there is less to profile -- notwithstanding the other reason for the U.K. state of affairs. Whether this is due to the recession and/or new media channels (streaming) is a nice debate about second guessing the reasons. That leaves indeed the many contributions on name variations / birth years. Well intended, but for me it is primarily a signal that the name standardisation annex person identification needs resolve (also announced for 4.0 if memory serves me well). | | | Eric

| Posted: | | | | I've always done most of my own profiling so I'm not complaining. But lately I've been busy downsizing my collection so I rarely buy anything new. And DVD is really not a hot commodity anymore (and BD never caught on) so what do you expect. It seems like everyone is on Netflix et al. now anyway. | | | First registered: February 15, 2002 | | | Last edited: by Nexus the Sixth |

| Posted: | | | | I have noticed that the most up to date... best profiles here in the US is the Blu-ray releases. Seems most contributors buy everything on Blu-ray when they can. But even then the DVD version is usually at least there. | | | Pete |

| Posted: | | | | Back when I did the DVDPca plugin, I had dreams of near total automation of a profile creation and assisted submission. Of course, that was folly, with some of the biggest issues being:
- Not even the DVD or BD disc contains all the technical metadata - Invelos uses proprietary BD disc IDs. You can't generate them unless in plugin mode - Cast / Crew can only be done correctly by watching the credits (yeah, right - I don't even get the time to watch the movie, much less credits). And my attempts to do OCR on screen shots failed. - No way to automatically generate the Overview
The most successful and accurate parts of DVDPca are in the extraction of discID, audio / video / subtitle metadata and run times. Many Features are scraped directly from the disc, and sometimes studios, title, Director and a couple of Actors are found in the metadata on the disc.
But I wonder if anybody has ideas for other ways I could make DVDPca help with the contributions process?
Some ideas I have:
- Do a non-specific web scan and offer "suggested cast / crew" with dropdowns for roles. Allow add / delete / change prior to profile creation. Subsequent editing would be via existing tools and DVDP itself, to finalize for submission, after verification using on-screen credits.
- Provide a split screen for Overview creation. Top half is an image (ostensibly back cover), with rubber band to highlight and zoom in on the overview, with an option to make OCR attempt. Bottom half is a text entry for manual typing of the overview, cut / paste and optional OCR results.
Your thoughts?
If anybody has an idea for a widget that can be added to DVDPca, and also wants to provide sample C# code, I will try to integrate it. | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. Advanced plugins available here. Hey, new product!!! BDPFrog. | | | Last edited: by mediadogg |

Quote: I don't know... maybe it is because I only buy US R1 titles... but I don't see any slowing down at all. Seldomly ever find something that is not already in the database. Most things I find not already in the database is child profiles for TV Series... and since that is optional I am not surprised by that.
I am also seeing all the time having to vote on updated profiles. Not slowed down any from what I can tell.
So I guess I just been rather lucky?
I agree with this. I check the Pending Updates several times in a day and usually find many to vote on. So it could be a locality thing. How many of those are new submissions, and how many are 'tinkering' with small changes on existing submissions? |

| Posted: | | | | Since we don't get to see New Additions to vote on... everything voted on is people updating profiles. But as I said... I seldomly ever have a time that a profile for my disc isn't in the database already.... I can't remember the last time had a disc that the profile was completely missing. | | | Pete |

| Posted: | | | | Thanks everyone for the comments - so my take away is that in the UK (and some other regions) the rate of submissions of new releases, especially on DVD (vs BR) are definitely declining and it's not just me buying entirely obscure releases. |

What do you deem obscure though? Certainly not the RoboCop trilogy boxed set, or Bullet to the Head. The biggest shock to me is the complete lack of Game of Thrones: Complete Second Season (on DVD). It's only present on BluRay. I guess it's inevitable that 'collectors' will switch to the higher quality format, but not 1 person in the UK (including me, I admit) have had the energy to submit the DVD details. I'm pretty sure it sold quite a few copies. I get that the intersection between 1. people who buy DVD, 2. people who want to record their collection, 3. people who use DVD Pro and 4. people who have the energy to input data is small, but it's definitely getting smaller. (I've always wondered why there was no community effort to record all this data in an open source format, not specifically this community, just in general. Plenty of open source 'movie' databases, but they don't track the versions and editions etc., etc.) |

The rules have become a vernacular only known to cliquey few here who demand you adhered to them without question. Cause you are a nothing and they are the omnipotent gods of the database. Frankly i don't blame Ken for not doing much in the way of improving the program. I hope he is on a beach somewhere far away from the BS his program has spawned. Because i don't think he ever envisioned it getting so preposterous. |

| Posted: | | | | Quoting samuelrichardscott: Quote: Yep. Lack of development and solving issues is something I believe has caused a very noticeable lack in even big titles being added. Personally, I no longer submit anything more than the bare minimum as I have better places to devote my time to where people behind the scenes care and improve the main issues, instead of just small ones to try and hide behind a lack of care, knowing that the hardcore few will post and back anything Ken/Gerri says about future instalments and updates. Expect some of these to post saying "what do you expect just one man to do?", "You only paid $30 for a lifetime subscription" etc etc.
Ken doesn't care, and if just 2 or 3 of some of the more prolific users here didn't, the program would bomb even quicker.
A real shame, as it is the best on the market, with a genuinely good community, but everyone else is catching up... fast. ^ Well said. | | | Last edited: by Kulju |

Yeh, some of the submission rules do seem a little tough going, it's why I only ever submit an initial profile with the basic stuff you can get from the DVD/Bluray case. I don't find that too onerous, but I do have to keep checking the submission FAQ every now and then (mainly because I don't submit hundreds). |
