From season 4 on the show can be purchased as 16:9 but it reveals thing that weren't mean to be revealed (yet).
For example in the episode Hush Finley got into the elevator even though he could not speak. His boss successfully pointed that out once he was off the elevator. The shot was composed in a way that you weren't supposed to see the "in case of emergency use stairs" at first but only after the boss pointed it out (because the camera made a deliberate move to get it into the 4:3 zone). In the widescreen edition the sign is visible at all times.
Also when Spike boinks Buffy you can now see James Marsters wear a flesh-coloured slip, something which was outside of the 4:3 screen.
Also it can compromise the integrity of some shots. For example, the filmer composes a shot with one or two of the characters in the center of the screen and other people are right beside them. In 4:3 these other people aren't visible at all but get a focus shot when their time has come. With a picture now shown in 16:9 it can happen that you see parts of the shoulder and the neck or even the face of the person and it just looks odd. I remember watching Angel on DVD. Season 1 is 4x3 as it should be. They opened Season 2 up to 16x9 even though I don't believe it was composed for that ratio in mind. I noticed several gaffes - crewmembers in scenes where characters are supposed to be alone, equipment in the frame, etc. I believe Season 3 on were shot with 16x9 in mind. | | | My DVD/Blu-ray Collection

Here's a classic example of why films/shows should be shown in their intended/original aspect ratio Sometime in the late 1960s MGM decided to crop Gone with the Wind (shot/composed for/at 1.37) and rerelease it thheatrically in widescreen 70mm....the result  yes, we get to see the faces of Olivia and Vivien but not much else and here's a classic example of a film shot in open matte but framed at / intended for 1.85 remove the matte for video / 4x3 TV broadcast, and the result is  (John Cleese is supposed to be naked....the scene is ruined) |

I'm usually all for OAR with movies, but I don't find TV as bothersome for whatever reason, especially if you get more image. That being said, I don't really own many TV titles that have been reformatted to 16x9. I believe the only ones I own are Lonesome Dove and Pride & Prejudice (1995). Both looked fine to me in 16x9. EDIT: Actually, I remembered they cropped The World at War to 16x9 for the BD and the interview clips look pretty bad. So I suppose it's more of a case-by-case basis. I seem to recall seeing some comparisons of Star Trek: TOS and TNG where the 16x9 versions looked rather cramped.
