The US (and Australia) are very lucky in being able to get such large houses (often at reasonable costs), I often get jealous, even ignoring the cost of buying the theatre itself... US average house floor area 201 m sq, UK: 76 m sq (and shrinking) US average house floor area per person 77 m sq, UK: 35 m sq Cost (floor area) UK about $5300 / sq m averaged across the whole country (to give some idea that's double France, which is next highest in Europe and 6 times that of Germany) US: about $890 /sq m average - nearly 6 times cheaper (though it will obviously vary a lot!) I'm not having a go but just hope you realise how lucky you are to be able to build these marvelous theatres and have big groups over, without being multi-millionaires... <jealous> OTOH I suppose for me it's easier to have a couple of friends over with similar tastes so I don't have to work out a movie that is suitable for everyone coming  - I go with themes too BTW... some friends are into War movies, others SF etc, so I'll dig out something appropriate for each group... and if it's my Mum and wife usually Love Actually or Bridget Jones's Diary *again* | | | | It is dangerous to be right in matters where established men are wrong | | | | Last edited: by Voltaire53 |

Paying attention to the projector sight lines and properly sizing the audio system, I think you can create quite an enjoyable and realistic experience. Dropping a screen from the ceiling, you don't have to worry about the space needed for a huge HDTV. I use small speakers and hidden sub woofers. A good A/V receiver can supply electronic compensation to simulate a larger space. They even make screens that rise up from the floor. A whole bunch of people could sit on floor cushions for a great immersive view. But I'm guessing that you already have something like this and I'll bet it sounds and looks just fine! | | | Thanks for your support.

| | Posted: | | | | Ok, thanks in part to some of your ideas, we have had two great movie nights recently. Some aspects that made it go well:
- Established a time schedule: 5PM arrive + food; 6PM movie1; 8PM intermission / dessert and coffee; 8:30 movie2; 11PM everybody with coats on and heading home (times approximate of course)
- Didn't allow anybody to bring stuff. Too time consuming. We prepared all snacks and drinks. Of course folks brought the bottle of wine / dessert, etc. But we had all the main stuff set up. Very efficient, and it was all delicious!
- I sent out a pdf of DVD Profiler report including all Blu-Rays that I was allowing to be selected.
- I made a preliminary selection of couple of movies in two categories and provided trailer links: 2 movies of Comedy Genre, 4 movies of Action Genre.
While eating after arrival, we had a brief discussion and consensus on the movie picks, which I then queued up, got the screen and room darkening shades prepared, so that by 6PM, we were ready to press "Play" on the first movie.
First night we watched Melissa McCarthy comedy, followed by Age Of Ultron. The second night, we started with Train Wreck, followed by Ex Machina.
Oh, and I was lucky that my Home Theater system performed at peak (for once, no glitches). Only minor issue, was the helicopter lift off in Ex Machina (awesome ATMOS effect) rattled a couple of pots we had in a closet. I will move them for next time.
(Correction: I think it was DTS:X, not Atmos, but I am no expert on this. The upshot is that the sound is truly immersive and awesome in all the movies that claim to have this effect. I changed the position of my front-high speakers to project them upwards and bounce-reflect off the ceiling at the recommended angle, and it seems to work great.) | | | Thanks for your support.

| | Posted: | | | | I love that other people do movie nights as an actual event and not "well what else are we gonna do." My fiance and our friends try to do a planned movie night once a week, around holidays we may do more than that to get through all the themed movies we'd like to watch together. I think we've come up with a rather interesting format for these evenings though. We look at is a chance to explore and get to know each other better. So each night one person chooses the movie we're all to watch and the pick rotates each week. Here's the catch, the group decides what genre that person gets to choose from. It's a lot of fun because we choos genre's that may be challenging depending on who is selecting the film. Anyway we've had a blast and I'm glad to see we're not the only ones! |
