Breaking News: Colin Powell endorses Obama

Quote:
Former Secretary of State [for George W. Bush] Colin Powell announced Sunday that he will be voting for Sen. Barack Obama, citing the Democrat's "ability to inspire" and the "inclusive nature of his campaign."

"He has both style and substance. I think he is a transformational figure," Powell said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

"Obama displayed a steadiness. Showed intellectual vigor. He has a definitive way of doing business that will do us well," Powell said.

Powell, a retired U.S. general and a Republican, was once seen as a possible presidential candidate himself.

Powell said he questioned Sen. John McCain's judgment in picking Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate because he doesn't think she is ready to be president.

That's quite the kick in the balls for McCain...

If unexpected, yes. But I've been hearing rumours of it for weeks now.
So I guess Senator McCain's only doubt was when would he make it public...

It would be a very difficult time, especially since we have failed to secure energy independence (due to obstructionism of the Democrats) as has been called for over the past 35 years, but rest assured, we'd be here AS A FREE NATION far longer than any country in Europe.

We've managed for quite a lot of centuries on our own, so I have no doubt we'd be perfectly able to keep our lives going for as long as needed.

I'm absolutely sure you'd be able to manage as well.

There would be some stupidly unnecessary difficult times on the beginning for both of us though...

P.S.- Emphasis on the "stupidly" and "unnecessary"

Yep, it won't have much of an effect.  McCain's loss was insured by the economy going into the toilet.  All Powell will do is buy a day or two of press for Obama and make it more difficult for McCain to try and get some momentum going.

I'd take the bet Skip.  McCain has yet to come up with a conherent message that excites anyone but his base.  And the base is much smaller than that of the democrats this time around.

To sway any of the remaining persuadable voters would require Obama to screw up in a way that seems vastly unlikely given his diciplined campaign to date.  An October suprise won't do it, it would take an October shocker.  (Obama confessing that he eats babies, evidence of a secret marriage to Osama Binladen, an alien invastion, etc...)

Hmmm - It's no surprise that Ultra Conservatives here have already minimized Powell's endorsement, as trivial, does not matter. Rest assured if Powell had endorsed 'senator hothead' this would be a major victory & significantly important endorsement.

And can you think of any other political campaign (from any side) where it wouldn't be like that?

Reading these last few posts makes me wonder just how few of you realize that what you witnessed this morning on "Meet The Press" was a general falling on his sword.

I have to agree with Snark, when he said; "Yep, it won't have much of an effect.  ......  All Powell will do is buy a day or two of press for Obama and make it more difficult for McCain to try and get some momentum going."

The thing I find interesting is that so few of you seem to realize that when Colin Powell made his statement to Tom Brokaw, a man who could have had his own successful run at the presidency, sealed his retirement from public service. You see, Powell remains firm in his full support of the war in Iraq, which removes any possibility of a position in an Obama administration. The fact that he has endorsed Obama removes any possibility of a position in any future republican administration above adviser. At present, even that seems extremely unlikely.

Make your jokes but a good man fell this morning.

Powell is definately a good man.  Speaking his conciense may or may not hurt his future though.

His support of the war is hardly enthusiastic and his comments have made it pretty clear that he felt that te initial decision to go in was a mistake.  In any case, the decision to invade is one that reasonabe people can disagree over.  (For example, Biden voted to authorize the attack)

Personally, I think he does have a future if he wants it.  He's an honorable man who will do his duty when called to do so by the president, whether he agrees completely with the decision or not.

Even if Obama doesn't want him, I see no reason why he would be anthemea to the Republicans over his endorsement.  My gut feeling is that the next time they have a real run at the Whitehouse they'll be running as a more moderate party and bringing Powell along for the ride would certainly help their bona fides in this regard.

Maybe it's wishful thinking, but I'll hope you're wrong.  It woud be a loss it if turns out that way.

If you go by the electoral votes and if the election was held today, Obama would win easily with a total of 364 to McCains 171 electoral votes.

Unless McCain can take away some 100 electoral votes away from Obama on election day, Obama will be the next president.

Gee Rico,

I guess you're giving up on the illusion that you haven't decided yet who you're voting for - clearly referring to McCain in the same derogatory manner that an ardent Obama supporter would surelly shows you have a clear preference.

Not that I (or anyone else) needed any further evidence since to my recollection you haven't said one positive thing about McCain that I can remember.

I seriously doubt your view of McCain would have changed based on a Powell endorsement so why should it be any different when the shoe is on the other foot. I doubt any of the Obama supporters on these forums would have said any different.

I also see you disdain for McCain and conservatives showing through by referring to anyone who disagrees with you and supports McCain as a "ultra conservative". Such hyperbole is not useful and doesn't contribute to "enlightenment" to use your own phrase.

By the way did you notice that McCain pointed to the support of over 200 admirals and generals as well as 4 former Secretaries of State in his comments on the Powell endorsement?

Quote:
Appearing on "FOX News Sunday," McCain responded to the news of Powell's endorsement by saying he still admires and respects his old friend.

"Well, I have always admired and respected General Powell. We are longtime friends. This doesn't come as a surprise. But I am also very pleased to have the endorsement of four former secretaries of state ... and I am proud to have the endorsement of well over 200 retired army generals and admirals," McCain said, noting the support offered by Henry Kissinger, James Baker, Lawrence Eagleburger and Alexander Haig.

I guess those 3 Generals are now an even smaller % of their peers.

I also agree with Dan and Skip that Powell essentially burned his bridges with the Republican party this morning and never really had much support in the Democratic Party to begin with given his support for the Iraq War and his role at the UN. However I respect Powell and his lifetime of service but I respectfully disagree with him here.
