When studying genre films (two 3-unit college classes) and in another class on the films of John Ford (where many other western/war films were used as comparison to his work), I found a long essay whose basic idea was that "Shane" was nothing more than the boy's dream -- a fantasy wish-fulfillment -- that in reality the white knight/savior never appeared at all.
But it certainly was not explicit within the film itself. | | | If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.
