This is not cast members it's studios where tiny punctuation variations or the use of abbrieviations don't mean it is a different studio. This is a database with report and filter functionality. As has been said it defeats all the purposes for having them if there are multiple ways of entering a single entity. I like Ken's suggestion that the studios are self corrrecting So Metro Goldwyn Mayer and MGM would all result in the same entry. | | | Last edited: by Graveworm |

| Posted: | | | | I like the common studio name suggestion. It would help both sides, the as credited fraction and the ones who want to be able to actually use the field for filtering and statistics.
But, the guys here are completely right. IF we just add any credited variation to the accepted studios list than we can just throw away the thread. Cause then it's just "as credited".
Ultimately we have three options:
1) Common Name System (up to Ken) 2) purely as credited 3) not as credited, but following a common name list (that's in theory what the studio thread should be, but this ridiculous addition not even supported by a majority poll or similar just shows the thread is not what it should be)
conclusion: current system is crap, we should start a poll whether to go for 2 or 3 (as 1 is up to Ken) | | | - Jan |

I'm not disagreeing with you, I'll just make the point that having a multitude of studio names all representing the same physical studio makes it impossible to easily select all films for a specific studio.
And if we are going to do this for studio's then we need to add the same 'credited as' for studio's as we use for Cast. I don't get this argument at all. To filter on a studio, you have to check a box. For most of the studios, all the names are right there. Every variation of MGM starts with an 'M'...they are all grouped together. I hontestly don't understand how it is 'impossible to easily select all films for a specific studio.' | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. I hontestly don't understand how it is 'impossible to easily select all films for a specific studio.' And how does that work for : Columbia Pictures Tristar Pictures Columbia Tristar? Or Twentieth Century Fox 20th Century Fox Fox Searchlight ?? |

| Posted: | | | | I know they are all acceptable but they are all the same company, to run a report or filter for one studio we need a common entity. Best soution I can think of is a common name / credited as. It should be much easier than cast and crew to link them since source informations is plentiful. |

Twentieth Century Fox 20th Century Fox Fox Searchlight Better example. Yes, some knowledge will be needed in these cases. I still don't see it as being an impossible problem. I prefer the actual film studio or production company name. I am a studio buff so that information is important to me. I know quite a few people that feel the same way. There are quite a few things we keep track of that I find quite useless. I leave them alone because I know other people want that data. Please, please, don't get rid of this simply because you don't see a need for it. And by 'you' I mean in general, not you in particular. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. I hontestly don't understand how it is 'impossible to easily select all films for a specific studio.' I suppose when I was thinking about this I was thinking about the graphs where each studio has a separate total. But it seems the decision now is all studio's as credited for contributed profiles. | | | Paul |
