I've gone with Blu-Ray because HD-DVD didn't support 1080P at first.

Since I can play both formats, it matters little to me who wins or if a movie I'm interested in is only for one format.

Besides, I like the blue cases better.

If your TV de-interlaces the signal correctly (and most do), it makes no difference.  I've been enjoying 1080p just fine even though my HD-DVD player only outputs 1080i.

98% of the content on both formats is 1080P24 on the disc. There are some titles taht are 1080i on ths disc in both formats I have a few of those titles myself. But both formats are great. I think HD DVD is better currently becuase of the interactivity, but starting in novemvber, BD players introduced will also have that same capabilty. I have been buying alot of titles. i'm up to 233 HD DVDs and 214 BDs so far. With Amazons excellent price plus another 10% off(from a special they had last year that gives me 10% off all BD and HD DVD titles until the end of 2007) and free two day shipping for being an Amazon Prime member, I can't help but keep purchasing alot. I did the same thing with DVD between 1998 and 2000. But once my 10% discount is gone I will really ease up on purchases and only buy select titles and do more rentals.

WB is having a pretty good sale on HD DVDs and Blu-rays including pre-orders.  They are coming out to ~$15 per disc which is cheaper than Amazon even with a discount.  I just picked up 14 more HD DVDs (0 Blu-rays since I buy HD DVDs for all neutral studios).

I'm entering the market for a HD player and am a bit mixed up with which format is best or will win the 'war'.

All the reviews I have found are outdated, and some of the facts are either wrong or speculation.

I've read

"Blue ray discs are more expensive" FALSE, visit to my local Best buy /Circuit city shows new disca are $35 HD DVD vs $29 Bkur Ray (The movie 300 comes to mind)

"Blue Ray Player are 2X as expensive as HD DVD"...FALSE, though the are more, I see a Toshiba for $400 and a SONY for $500.

With the added capacity of Blue ray, and the support of more movie studios, would not BLUE RAY be the leader?

Or are there other factors I am not considereing?

The one factor I DO like about the HD DVD is they have both standard def and hi-def on the same disc, I'm not sure if the BLUE RAY discs do this or not.....??

The only real "downside I can see is that the Blue Ray discs are thinner, but I pamper my DVD's so this I do not feel will be an issue for me.

What does HD DVD bring with it that BLUE RAY does not?

I have a decent purchace lined up once I can make my mind up.

#1 HD Disc's from Best Buy are Retail price and a total rip off, but generally they are the SAME price, usually $24.94!  If you see a higher price HD DVD it's either a Multi Disc set like Planet Earth, or a HD DVD/DVD Combo disc which increases the price just a bit, but it's like getting 2 full movie versions in one that play in HD on your HD DVD player and yet it also works in all your DVD players also.

I would never buy a HD movie from Best buy anyway.  Buy from Amazon!  They're normally  $19.95 each unless again they are a Combo disc or something.  That's where I get mine, I also get 10% off any of them that I buy, so it's basically $17.95 for a HD DVD, with NO TAX and FREE 2nd day shipping for me.  So why $24.95+ Tax as Best buy, when I can just wait 2 days and pay $17.95 total for the same movie?

#2 Blu-Ray players are still quite a bit more expensive then HD DVD players.  You can buy one to plug into your Xbox 360 if you have one for $179 now plus I think 3 free HD Movies.  There's deals to get HD DVD players for $299 and cheaper!  Before you know it, they will get into the $199 price range for a stand alone player.

Also keep in mind, Blu-Ray isn't a finished format!!!  That's right, everyone is a BETA TESTER!  It hasn't been finalized yet.  Not until October 2007 IF everything goes according to plans.  Most having to do with the JAVA stuff which is why movies like Batman Begins and the Matrix have been delayed coming out on Blu-Ray.  The stuff being added to Blu-Ray, HD DVD already does and has done since day 1!  Most of the current stand alone Blu-Ray players out now can't be Upgraded.  That means if you buy a disc with the new extra features, you can't access them, let alone play them without a NEW Blu-Ray player.  Unless you get a PS3 which is far more flexible.  Still the Ethernet port will still be a option for the Blu-Ray format when it is finalized unlike HD DVD which ALL have it.  So if you buy a player without the port, No down loadable content, something HD DVD does now with the latest Movie "300" which is one of many things that the Blu-Ray version of the same movie lacks!!!

Why is this?  Well the PS3 needed to get released.  It was delayed 6 months as it was.  If Blu-Ray waited until October 2007 to be Finalized and started releasing players then, what would be the point?  HD DVD would have already won and been the clear winner.  Instead we have this HD DVD/Blu-Ray war and most people are uniformed on the realities of Blu-Ray.  Even though Blu-Ray has a extra 20 gig's in space, Picture wise they are pretty much the same now, before when the Blu-Ray Movies were being released they were on 25 gig disc's are looked like garbage.  Read some of the early reviews.  Even now with the HD DVD disc versions having extra content that the Blu-Ray versions lack, the Picture quality is the SAME when both are using the same compression format.  What does that extra 20 gig's get you?  Nothing at all so far.  If some movie had so much extra content that there wasn't enough space on a HD DVD disc, what's the problem using 2 HD Dvd disc's?  Been done over and over again on DVD's and hasn't been a problem.

#3 Blu-Ray has more Studio support, but it hasn't meant much.  They are both equal in the Number of Movies released anyway!  I think HD DVD has the better movies myself also.  What the Movie Studio's really like is the Double Copy protection Blu-Ray Offers.  Of course Blu-Ray like I said hasn't been Finalizes, and so the second layer of Copy Protection hasn't been put to use YET, but it's called BD+.  It will be so much harder to rip your Blu-Ray Movie disc then a HD DVD Movie disc once BD+ Disc's start being released.  Right now the first layer of Copy protection on BOTH formats have pretty much been cracked.  If your one to have your Movies ripped and placed on a Media Server, well your either will have to stick with DVD, or HD DVD, or get yourself a Multi-Disc Player if/when one of them come out.

#4  HD DVD can play Picture in Picture, something Blu-Ray can't do yet, but will later this year.  Down loadable Content is just a Option for Blu-Ray, and required for ALL HD DVD players.  Alone with more Memory storage I believe on HD DVD.  There's other things with Menu's and whatnot.  Blu-Ray Disc's aren't thinner!  They just store the Data real Close to the bottom surface, which allows them to pack in more Data per layer.  This is why they have to have a Coating on them to help protect them.  Supposedly it works pretty good.  HD DVD Discs are made the same way as DVD's.

BD have to win, or at least live on as I have purchased SONY's flagship and it costs me nearly 1/24 of my early income
Well I have read on a lite bit first and I am confident that BD will live on, only time can tell otherwise.

ceep on posting broderp...

And Skip you gave me an simular answer to one of my first posts also, I had to go for the intervocative forum to see the erlier posts...  a link could not have hurt

Ole

Because Sony has such a good track record with Betamax, MD Discs, UMD Discs, MemoryStick is a Pointless Sony thing also, SACD, the other WAR( SACD/DVD Audio, and look how good that's turned out! ....  NOT) and I'm sure there's other's I can't name right now.  I so love they're DRM infested Music CD's!!!  One of my Favorite's, the FAKE Movie Reviewer they could post on the movie posters and Ads giving Great Reviews on Sony's Crappy Movies!!!  Nice large fine for that one!!!

Blu-Ray is not even a Finished Standard.  Everyone using it are BETA Testers.  All the people buying Stand Alone players are screwed and will have to buy a NEW Blu-Ray player if they want access to the extra Disc Contents when Movies like Batman Begins and the Matrix finally get released, which is why they are currently held up.  Waiting for Blu-Ray to be Finalized in October 2007!  Sony's a JOKE.  I'll NEVER buy a Blu-Ray player.  I'd rather keep using DVD.

ALL HD DVD Disc's released since day 1 are 1080P!!!  The Players released early on were only 1080i, but guess what?  If you have a 1080P HDTV, that is what it's displaying on your HDTV anyway!!!  Your 1080P HDTV can't display 1080i, it's converted to 1080P anyway, so the results are pretty much the same.  You would NEVER be able to tell the difference.

JBDragon's on the ball.  One of the best posts I've seen on the subject.

One point you missed is the fact that HD-DVD is region free so a fair few of the titles that are Blu Ray only (like Underworld Evo, etc etc) are available in other regions as HD-DVD.

SONY is the only player that I know of that have 1080i komponent out..
This was one of the reasons I bougth SONY BD, as I have analog projector.

And for studios I have heard that Universals 'HD-DVD only' is only for one year and that it is BD from them also soon.

JBDragon: whats the trouble?  one of SONY's players ditch you?
What do you possibly can have against BetaMAx and MD I wonder...
And Yes you can se the difference in deinterlacers, the money talks.
We are all at the same age, only at different time...

Have had zero problems with the memorystick on my Sony camera. Has worked really well so far. Its also a very widly supported memorystick, compared to many others. I would prefer an universal standard on those, but there isnt one.

As for MD, obviously you havent used one. Before mp3 players, it was a must to anyone that used walkmans. It was a huge step forward from crappy casettes and skipping big CD's. Used it for many years before they started making proper mp3 players. The thing with MD players is that so many seem to be clueless about for what it was made for. You could buy a player and it had zero impact if you were the only guy using it. Cause you didnt buy content to it, you buy blank discs to it.

All Blu-ray and HD DVD players have 1080i or 720p component out.  No Blu-ray or HD DVD can output 1080p over component as that is not allowed.

As far as studios are concerned, no one knows what will happen in the future.

I believe the deal is 5 free movies with purchase.  And if I'm not mistaken, you still get King Kong with purchase, bringing the total to 6 free movies.  But I'm not 100% certain on the King Kong thing.

I was at CostCo on Sunday and they're still selling the HD-D2 for $250.  It's $280 with a $30 instant rebate.  And the D2 is the exact same hareware as the A2.  It's just rebranded for retail reasons.

yup. It's 5 free movies. 15 to pick from (I believe). 3 in each category and you pick one from each of 5 categories. (my son was just looking yesterday as he will be buying one this month)

No on the King Kong being included, although you may still find one on the shelves somewhere if you find an old box.

from what I hear the porn industry is on board with HD-DVD.  That was one of the major deciding factors in the VHS/Beta war so thats one major feather in the cap of HD.  As for me, I am buying combo discs now and will be purchasing a combo player in January.  The Samsung combo player is supposed to hit before Christmas at $549.
