Yeah i think you are violatingb the Rule. Good enough for you.

If you won't do it for me, any chance you'd grace the 47 users that currently agree with me the courtesy of explaining where you feel that the rules say that we should not capitalize "is" (or even any form of "to be")? I feel that various posters in this thread supplied enough "evidence" for the exact opposite of your opinion, so maybe you'd like to eloborate...

If they all decide to jump off a bridge, are you gonna follow just because a "huge majority" wants to?  Can't you think for your self?

So you agree with Skip on this? Maybe you want to explain why? Again, the rules just exclude "joining words", and I really don't see how you can consider a verb as a joining word. IMHO, I feel that enough evidence has been supplied to show that "is" should be capitalized for DVD Profiler purposes, and no-one has tried to show any evidence to the contrary. I can only suppose that is because there simply isn't any...

I can perfectly "think for myself" - but thanks for your concern. As I said before, I encountered a title containing the verb "is", and noticed it wasn't capitalized as it is on all other titles containing "is" in my database. Before submitting my change, I re-checked the rules on the subject, and lo-and-behold, the rules mention that we shouldn't capitalize "joining words", and go on to name a couple of examples. Nowhere do the rules mention a special exception for "is" (or all forms of "to be"). As such, I thought (and think) my contribution was (is) perfectly in line with the rules. I'm only more convinced after seeing the results of my poll and the various posts of other users on the subject. Maybe you should try "thinking for yourself", instead of just blindly supporting Skip's POV without even realising what you're actually supporting. To return the question: if Skip decides to jump off a bridge, will you follow him?

I think we should make it easy on everyone and capitalize every word in a title regardless of what those words may be.

Although Belgians and Dutch usually fight  I can only agree with T!M and understand his frustration. Skip and Rifter just seem to be obnoxious for the fun of it rather than clearly stating WHY they think it should be 'is' rather than 'Is'.
As I mentioned before, the rules should be rewritten since 'joining words' is not a standard term and open to everyone's interpretation. The link someone else posted had clear grammatical rules and great examples of good and bad capitalizations.

BTW, is 'joining words' a grammatical term at all ? I'm no native English speaker but I would be surprised if it was. So the rules should be modified to unequivocally tell which type of words (grammatically) don't get a capital. From what I find online, I guess these would be adpositions (prepositions, postpositions,..) and articles.

The proper term, as I pointed out in my first reply, is 'conjunction'.  A conjunction is a word that is used to join words, phrases or clauses.  Because 'is' is a verb, it can not be a conjuction.  It is grammatically impossible.

If the bridge is about to collapse and the correct course of action was to jump off the bridge, then yes, I would follow the majority.

In this case the majority is correct.  The word 'is' is not a joining word.  You complain about being called Skip's crony yet here you are defending him when his opinion is gramatically incorrect.  I am at a complete loss.

Based on what?  The rule says, "For English titles do not capitalize joining words..."  'Is' is not a joining word so how is he violating the rules?

I never said it should be 'is'.  In fact, since it is a verb, it should be capitalized in a title.  Maybe you guys should take a course in critical reading so you understand what somebody actually says when they post something.  My comments about jumping off a bridge had to do with certain people who put far too much reliance on the majority of some poll and turn off their brains as a result.

Always gotta parse things and find some non-existant loophole, don't you?  You know very well what I meant.  And if you were paying attention, you'd know I never said it shouldn't be lower case.  DID I?

Except in this case, the poll shows that most people have their brains switched on as the majority have correctly voted that you capitalise the "is".
So instead of posting to say that Tim is right in his change to the title, you instead choose to attack him because he started a poll.
This is a user database and polls are usually the quickest and easiest way of gauging the users' opinions.

I didn't parse anything.  You made a comparison about about someone following the majority.  You used the 'jumping off the bridge' analogy and that is meant to show how following the majority is a bad thing.  Well, in the context of THIS thread, the majority is correct so I had to find a way to make the analogy a good thing.

I did pay attention.  While you didn't answer the question, you impugned the majority.  The only logical conclusion to be had here is that you agreed with the minority...in this case Skip.  I am not a mind reader, I can only judge what is put in front of me.

Unicus never said the word "conjunction" was in the rules, he said that was the proper term for "joining words", a phrase that is in the rules.
It still doesn't change the fact that "is" is a verb, not a "joining word" and so should be capitalised.

If you want to claim that conjunctions are not covered by the rules, then in order to support your 'no' vote, you'll need to prove that "is" is a "joining word". Since there's no such thing as a joining word (if you want to parse this), then "is" can't be a joining word. Therefore it must be capitalized. Therefore your vote is against the rules.
